They fucked the release of 'Underneath' up though.
First she was pissed that the director of the video she made for that festival leaked it. Then she said she might pick another song to release as the first single, and if she didn't then she would shoot another and better video for 'Underneath'.
Then it stayed quiet. Then it was official that 'Underneath' would still be the first single. OK, fair enough.
The promotion is just plain awkward though. And the handeling of add dates is ridiculous. They should have sent it to pop radio! But NOOOOOOOO
She shot the video last month. When she should've shot it atleast two months ago. There is just NO buzz. It's even worse than with So-Called Chaos. Atleast 'Everything' was treated correctly.
But now? Just UGH
Also, this record is going to be a new and innovating sound for Alanis. Like it will blow us away I'm sure. The clips sound fantastic.
So that's why I think (although I still like the song) that picking 'Underneath' as the first singe was a mistake. It does NOT represent the sound of the new album at all.
The song could've been on Under Rug Swept and even So-Called Chaos.
It's too much playing safe with this song, when she should be shocking people again like she did in the 90's!!!
'Straitjacket' and 'Giggling Again For No Reason' sound like they could make her REALLY relevant again. So why they chose to take the safe route I do not get.
Non fans already responded to 'Underneath' saying, why do all her songs sound the same? And while it's true that most of her singles sound the same, it's a darn shame.
And I'm worried that they'll screw up her singles again like they did ever since Junkie. Two singles and it's done :/
It's been rumored that 'Incomplete' is the next single. I haven't heard it, cause I refuse to listen to the acoustic live performances cause I don't want to spoil the record. I've heard that it sounds safe and same old Alanis again.
The album version has been described different though.
But still, there was a time that she was terrified to have massive succes again like with the massive Jagged Little Pill. Cause she couldn't handle it anymore, that's why she fled to India after the final tour of JLP.
And ever since she's been reluctant to regain such success. But with this record she wants to be relevant again, that's also why she worked with Guy Sigsworth.
So this deserves exposure.
This has the chance to be one of her ebst work to date! Being called a masterpiece.
I hope from the bottom of my heart that she doesn't get overlooked. Recognition!
That being said, this album will not disappoint me at all. Atleast we'll have it.
