Avril Lavigne thrills Kingston audience

A sea of glowsticks, a tidal wave of pink shirts, and a tsumani of happy screaming teenaged girls broke gave Avril Lavigne a homecoming to remember Tuesday night at the K-Rock Centre.
And Lavigne gave them a high-tech concert which at times seemed like a music video. For starters the floor and backdrop of her massive stage was emblazoned with the skull and crossbone/plaid heart which has become her symbol. The six dancers who appeared frequently added to that mirage, especially when they danced to cover up Lavigne's occasional costume changes.
And during the song Best Damn Thing, while the video for the song showed Lavigne and cheerleaders behind her, on stage Lavigne and the dancers were doing some cheerleading of their own.
Not that any of that mattered to the crowd. Much more thrilling for them was the opportunity to sing along (and loudly they did) with their idol on Complicated, Lavigne's breakout hit and the third song of the night.
In fact there scarcely seemed a song from Lavigne's canon of three CDs that they didn't know, and the singer encouraged them often to sing along.
Lavigne's career is some 30 million records sold along the way now but on stage she literally seemed like the girl next door, or the next town as her on-stage persona is girlish and friendly. She pointed out a school chum in the audience and noted that her parents, sister, brother and in-laws were in the audience. She showed she could do more than sing, by playing the electric guitar, piano and drums during the concert, and in a way that reminded you of a little-seen niece showing off her talents at Christmas.
Like the checkerboarded set, the concert was criss-crossed between heavy-hitting rockers and mellower songs, which allowed Lavigne to interact more with the audience. The concert opened with a couple of crunchy rockers Girlfriend and I Can Do Better from her third and most recent CD Best Damn Thing.
The middle portion got acoustic with Lavigne playing the piano on the sad ballad When You're Gone, then coming to the front of the stage with a couple of acoustic guitarists. Her latest hit, Hot, which is a sassy rocker, actually sounded pretty good when done in this fashion, although the drums did help to thunder it along.
Then back to the rockers, and what I thought was the best part of the concert. Songs like Everything Back But You, The Best Damn Thing, I Don't Have To Try and He Wasn't had power to burn.
In a sense they dwarfed the closing number Sk8er Boi, which didn't have the same oomph no matter how many dancers were cavorting on stage. As the song ended Lavigne waved to the crowd and disappeared through a hole in the stage, never to return.
An encore would have been appreciated.
