VERSATILE AVRIL HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES
The Jonas Brothers might have been the support act for Avril Lavigne last night at Plymouth Pavilions, but apparently they're so huge back home that in their native USA the diminutive Canadian Sk8ter Girl would have been supporting them.
Affiliated to Disney and aimed at the younger end of the teen market, they're certainly cute to look at, and can knock out a half-decent tune, but perhaps would have had more credibility as a threesome if they hadn't needed a five-piece backing band.
And I would have found them a tad more tolerable if their lead singer's voice hadn't reminded me of nails scraping down a blackboard. Still, with their self-titled debut album out on the 23rd of this month we'll soon find out how popular they are - but give me McFly any day.
Or Avril Lavigne for that matter. A pink graffiti 'Avril' projected on to the massive back screen announced her arrival, and she duly appeared up through the floor, to a deafening cacophony of screams.
Accompanied by a bevy of 'street-wise' dancing girls who mirrored her moves, and a couple of lads whose impressive break-dancing brought shrieks of disbelief from the assembled masses, she opened her show with up-tempo belters including Girlfriend, before bringing the pace down a couple of notches. The ensuing string of slower songs - which featured Avril on electric guitar performing Happy Ending and practically the entire sell-out crowd on backing vocals for Complicated - enabled us to appreciate her distinctive singing voice more effectively.
Taking turns on acoustic guitar, piano and even drums to accompany herself, she constantly rang the changes while fast-moving videos of the big singles projected behind the band kept the visuals exciting.
Her latest video, for the title track of the latest album, Best Damn Thing, portrayed a sophisticated grunge goddess image, but there were others that showed her in a far more girly light.
When You're Gone presented our Avril in a series of gorgeous floaty dresses showing her more sensitive side, while the accompaniment to Hot showed her as a sexy lady in corsets and ballgowns.
And for Sk8ter Boi, the big finale on stage, she appeared in a feminine, figure-flattering, pale pink hoody, leaving her more aggressively-attired dancers to deliver that snarling street attitude.
A fun, pacey show, with never a dull moment, it demonstrated that Avril is a versatile entertainer who has already successfully made the transition from teen idol to pop diva.

What did I say about jonas bros sounding like shit? "I would have found them a tad more tolerable if their lead singers voice hadn't reminded me of nails scraping down a chalkboard" my thoughts exactly.
A five piece backing band? There's 8 people in their band? lol.
Good job Avril!
The critic didn't comment on Avril's sweet ass though.
