Wet weather conditions didn't dampen fans' spirits at the MuchMusic Video Awards last night in Toronto. Thousands of onlookers surrounded the MuchMusic headquarters on the corner of Queen and John Sts., standing in the rain for hours to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.
Reality stars Girlicious handed out the first award of the night, giving R&B queen Rihanna the trophy for Best International Video for Don't Stop the Music. The Barbadian beauty won both MMVAs she was up for, also picking up the MuchMusic.com Most Watched Video award for her addictive hit Umbrella.
Actor/singer/heartthrob Jesse McCartney took time out from plunging young girls headlong into puberty with a twitch of his dimples to present the award for Best Director to Kevin De Freitas for his work on rockers Hedley's For the Nights I Can't Remember.
Ottawa Senators centre Jason Spezza dropped in to present the MuchVIBE Best Rap Video to Ottawa-based rapper Belly for his hit jam Ridin'. Considering the hip-hop star had created a Senators-themed anthem for their 2007 Stanley Cup run, Go Sens Go, Spezza was an apt choice to present the award - suspicious coincidence or not.
The MuchLOUD Best Rock Video went to Hedley (their third of the evening) for their power ballad She's So Sorry, also directed by Kevin De Freitas. The award was presented by Rainn Wilson of The Office, who managed to convince everyone that he'd actually heard of the Canadian band.
Avril Lavigne proved critics (and sales figures) wrong by taking home the People's Choice Favourite Canadian Artist award for ballad, When You're Gone. The Napanee, Ont., mall punker accepted the award via video from tour in Europe.
Meanwhile, the People's Choice Favourite Canadian Group went to Montreal band Simple Plan, who have won the award each of the five times they've been nominated for it.
Emo(ish) rockers Fall Out Boy took home the People's Choice Favourite International Video for The Take Over, the Breaks Over and accepted the honour via video and sans pants - to the crowd's screams-filled delight.
The night's final award for Best Video went to For the Nights I Can't Remember by Hedley and capped off the Abbotsford, B.C., band's four-award night.
Several awards were presented during the red carpet arrivals before the show. Canadian group Wintersleep won the VideoFACT Best Independent Video award for Weighty Ghost; California angst-rockers Linkin Park won best International Video by a Group for Bleed It Out; Best Post-Production honours went to Montreal's Sam Roberts for Them Kids; and Best Cinematography went to Hedley for She's So Sorry.
