HERSHEYPARK STADIUM - review - Patriot News
Saturday, July 26, 2008BY KIRA L. SCHLECHTER
Of The Patriot-News
Normally there is no "I" in my concert reviews. I figure my byline is enough to let you, the readers, know what I thought of a show, so there's no need for "me" and "I" to butt in.
But since I took my 7-year-old daughter Brenna to see the latest tween/pre-teen Disney sensations, the Jonas Brothers (Kevin, Joe and Nick), Friday at Hersheypark Stadium, I thought -- well, just this once.
So we compared what Mom the critic and daughter the fan had to say about how well the brothers did -- and how well they satisfied their legions of screaming fans.
And scream they did, throughout and without fail, these girls in ponytails and braces, wearing shorts and skirts and all number of JoBros T-shirts and memorabilia, bought and homemade alike. They crowded around the limousine in the parking lot beforehand and stormed the merchandise booths, dropping shocking sums of money (and that was just the moms).
Their energy never flagged -- they jumped up and down, they sang every word. And did we mention they screamed?
Starting with opener Demi Lovato, who co-starred with the brothers in the Disney movie "Camp Rock," here's what we thought:
MOM: She's an appealing performer with a pleasantly strong voice, sassy and saucy but not vulgar, assertive but not obnoxious on songs like "That's How You Know," "Get Your Party On" and "Get Back."
BRENNA: "She's awesome. She's a good girl singer."
Moving on to second opener, Avril Lavigne (gee, how the once-popular have fallen):
MOM: Her set of punchy, punky hits like "Girlfriend," "I Can Do Better," "Complicated," "My Happy Ending," and "Sk8er Boi" was really well-received (this was girl-power night, at least at first), with all the girls singing every word. But Lavigne sang with an odd, forced smile that was almost a grimace and her voice could get a little strident. Kudos, though, for her crystal-encrusted microphones and for getting a bunch of tattooed guys to play pink instruments.

Why do people write these reviews , like that. "oh how the once popular have fallen" and then he says , "...was really well-received..."
Pick one or the other.

They're saying that because she's opening for a Disney band. It doesn't matter how the crowd recieved her, she's still an opening act when she shouldn't be!

^ I agree, but since its their tour, I guess I can understand. However, Avril should not have jumped on this second touring period with them for these dates in the first place.

why does everyone give so much of a fuck? avril could headline on her own very easily and she didn't. she's just doing them a favor because her record label told her to.

Yes , I agree with a lot of these statements , I think some of the reviewers in the U.S. don't realize that there is a much bigger world out there. and just a month ago the Jonas kids were opening for Avril. As far as I understand Avril and the Jonas brothers are co-headlining the tour, so she really isn't opening for them. but this seems to be a point left out. similar to Metallica and Guns n Roses on the "use your illusion" tour. Just because Metallica went on first doesn't mean they have fallen from popularity.
I don't know I just always get the feeling that the media in general is trying to make Avril look like she is not doing very well. and it is true that TBST is not her best album, but I usually look at these things like ; what was she trying to do, Make a fast upbeat album that would be fun for a live show, and she definetly accomplished that with TBDT. but I'm pretty sure she will do something different for the next album. and When it comes out, maybe it will be the best selling album of the year for a female artist , just like TBDT was.

BUt then she's not doing them a favor. She just is doing what her fucked up record label told her. "I run this ship" (Quote: Avril Lavigne) ---> Not realy. Sorry Av.

but she is not openning so whats the problem, someone has to get on stage first. It's funny how some american people think its only about America and the rest of the world doesn't matter. The Europe tour was amazing. But they don't seem to bother to talk about that, they don't care that the Jonas Brothers opened for her and they don't care that it was a HUGE succes. They don't care that at the end everyone came for Avril, they don't care that the Jonas Brothers needed Avril to beak through in Europe. If it wasn't for Av they wouldn't have played so many shows.
But like I said, they don't care, which is lame and sad. They should get some internet to check there information before they write things that are bullshit
