Plus, I get that it's ficiton and all, but every fucking day I have to listen to people say that it's changed their life and they're FINALLY not alone and that suddenly they've found a piece of themselves in something destined to become great literature. Um, no.
I also don't get people who claim that Fight Club changed their life and their outlook on things. Yes, it was a pretty good book, but there was nothing in that book that was life-changing and breath-taking and just fantasticly moving. General message: people suck. Life suck. Society sucks. Use your head and question things. Rebel against the establishment. ...Wow, that's some heavy stuff right there. Yeah, because that's nothing I or anyone else could have figured out on our own. Sure, it portrayed that in a slightly creepy, dark story that you probably won't read everyday, but that does not make it life-changing. Sorry.
Oh, we read Farenheight 451 in eighth grade. I didn't get it/like it, but everytime I said that someone would jump on me and act like I just commited one of the worst crimes our little town had ever seen. Sorry, no. I just didn't like it. I don't think it was awful, it was just weird and hard to follow. I don't know.

I can see what you mean about the "not changing my life" thing. Although I did like Perks, it certainly didn't change my outlook on anything, or my life, and I wouldn't call myself like Charlie at all. I wouldn't call it one of my favorite books. I do see a lot of people get that way with it--calling it one of their favorites and it seems to have gained a hold in a certain demographic. But, like you said, I'll agree to disagree with them.
I started reading Catcher awhile back and never finished, but I do intend to begin it again. It seems like it's really good.
St. Jimmy--I never read Fight Club, but I watched the movie, and I was "Meh. What's the big deal?" A few others I've read of Palahniuk's--Choke, Diary--aren't bad, but I don't understand the praise he gets from book critics.
In fact, on the back of one of them, a critic said his vision is extraordinary and he's a "satirist that we need." I'm like "Oh...kay..."
I think a lot of classics are overrated. In high school, I remember I didn't particularly like 1984, Kafka's Metamorphosis, or Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Those were painful to get through.
But I still have liked a lot of classics--Jane Austen comes to mind.
And this is officially the longest post I have ever written and I'm proud that it's about something educational.

I really liked Lullaby by Palahniuk, but Diary especially I found REALLY predictable and overrated. Invisible Monsters wasn't without its charm but in general he's just so, SO overrated.
I also don't think I can say this fairly since I haven't read them, but I just don't see the hype about the Twilight books. Like... maybe they're brilliant, I don't know, but they're just so overhyped and everyone and their sister is such a fangirl right now, I just think that if I do ever pick one up I'm inevitably going to be disappointed because it cannot POSSIBLY be as good as everyone says it is.

I KNOWWW. Every goddamn person and their mothers is madly in love with Twilight. I mean, good lord, it can't be THAT good. It doesn't even sound that good. A girl falls in love with a vampire, and apparently a third guy is thrown in. Whoopdeedoo. It just sounds like way too much of a typical teen drama intended to make a bunch of girls fall in love with a fictional character with a twist. And the twist is vampires.
Idk, I haven't read it, but hearing about it, I just don't think it sounds that amazing. At all.
