TORONTO (CP) - Singer Jann Arden is the big winner at this year's SOCAN awards.
The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada is honouring the popstar for six hits that have reached the 100,000-airplay mark on Canadian radio last year. Arden's tunes, including "Could I Be Your Girl" and "Will You Remember Me", are among 11 English-language songs being honoured in Toronto for reaching the impressive benchmark.
Others include Nick Gilder and James McCulloch's 1975 hit "Roxy Roller," performed by Sweeney Todd and Rich Dodson's "Devil You," a 1973 hit performed by the Stampeders.
An awards gala in Toronto presented Arden with a National Achievement Award on Wednesday night as well as a Pop Music Award for radio airplay in 2005.
A ceremony in Montreal on Tuesday recognized French-language hits and presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Quebec folk duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle.
Other musicians noted for frequent radio play were Avril Lavigne, Michael Buble, George Canyon, Sarah Harmer and Daniel Powter.
Burlington, Ont., rock band Finger Eleven received an International Achievement Award.
SOCAN is a copyright collective that makes sure songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers are compensated when their music is broadcast or performed in public.
