Cheating Fans Give Avril Lavigne a YouTube Lift
Fans of teenybopper Avril Lavigne are gaming YouTube in an attempt to bump the Canadian rocker into the site's top-ranked video spot. Web-savvy followers of the punk popstress have devised a constantly refreshing website that adds one pageview every 15 seconds to Lavigne's music video "Girlfriend," which currently has 88,935,170 views.
The coveted top-ranking position is currently held by Judson Laipply's "Evolution of Dance" video, which clocks in at 89,714,055 pageviews. Forum administrator Staticrebelle on the fan site Avril Bandaids posted the following call to arms: "Avril Lavigne's 'Girlfriend' music video is less than 1 million views away from becoming the most watched video of all time on YouTube.... So what we're attempting won't be easy but ... Bahh who am I kidding? Of course it will be easy because we have a secret weapon." The Avril Bandaids YouTube auto-refresher shows more than 100,000 pageviews have been added to the video since the site's launch June 19. At time of posting, Wired.com has requested comments from YouTube, Judson Lappily and Avril Bandaids. While YouTube's policy prohibits users from using any "automated system," illegitimate rank inflation by using refreshers is fairly common. In March, Waxy.org investigated a mysterious surge in online traffic for a fan-made video for Brazilian band Cansei Der Sexy. Video site NewTeeVee reported in 2007 that popular vloggers LisaNova and Corey "Mr. Safety" Williams have both been accused of cheating the system. Our guess is the system will self-regulate. Either YouTube will remove the video from the top slot, as was the ultimate outcome involving the Cansei Der Sexy video, or Laipply-favoring hackers will step in and blast the cheating refresher site. The video of cansei de ser sexy was getting 3 millions per day, and the links were displaying more than 21 millons just for 1 page that just displays an animation flash that doesn't play any video or something when you enter in it, thats an automated system, lisanova put a comment to every suscriber she had, in that moment like 50 to 70 thousands, thats an automated system.
