Steve dashed into the cold night without his jacket and made for the Creedley house, where he found that there was caution tape on both sides.
"What side would she be on?" Deryck asked, panting behind Steve.
"Judging from the camera angle, the other one." Cone said matter-of-factly.
"You are SUCH a nerd." Deryck said quickly and slightly accusingly, turning to face Cone.
"Shut up." Cone looked at his feet.
"Look! There’s a crowd really tight together in a circle over there! I think something’s happened." Steve gestured towards the other side of the caution tape.
The three of them ran around the Creedley house to the tight circle.
"I swear that missing chick was here before."
"Yeah, that Anna Von Frances girl."
"Anna?!" Steve moved forward, "What were you saying about Anna Von Frances?"
"She was here, like, 2 minutes ago."
"Where did she go?" asked Deryck.
"I unno. There was a flash of light and she was gone." The girl pushed some hair out of her face, "Oh my god, you guys are Sum 41!"
"Yeah we are. We would talk to you about that, swear to God, but we’re looking for Steve’s fiancee right now." Cone quickly forced out, then dashed off to find Steve and Deryck, who had gone to scour the nearby bushes.
"Geez, what a ridiculous excuse to not talk to a fan. I am so putting that in my blog."
Cone was about to turn around and go back to the girl, but decided to prioritize. The fans that read that blog would just have to find out he was actually really good with fans when they met him.
"Cone!" Shannon, his wife, pushed out of the crowd and hugged him. "Cone, I saw Anna. I don’t know where she is now. What sounded and looked like a thunderstorm happened and then she was gone."
"I heard." Cone put his arm around Shannon’s shoulders, much to the mutterings of the teenaged girls huddling behind him, "We’re looking for her right now."
"Is Steve?" Shannon’s eyes widened in fear.
"Yeah... why?"
"He’s gonna get himself arrested! Remember what the police chief said?!"
"Oh shit!" Cone let go of Shannon’s shoulders and took her hand, then ran in Steve’s voice’s general direction.
When they turned the corner, they spotted him carefully searching the bushes that Deryck had already brushed through.
Shannon tugged Cone’s arm and, as fast as their long legs would carry them, they ran towards Steve.
But before they got there, a police car pulled up. To their terror, the police chief got out.
Steve froze as he spotted him.
"Mr. Jocz. May I ask what you are doing in someone else’s dead rose bush looking guilty?"
Steve thought for a moment, then stood up boldly, "I’m looking for Anna Von Frances. I’m still trying to find her."
"And you remember what I said to you?"
"Yes." Steve replied defiantly.
"Very well. Mr. Jocz, please put your hands up against the car."
"Shit." muttered Cone, and Shannon hugged him. Deryck stood frozen against the bush, his clothes torn, his eyes wide.
His hands cuffed, Steve was directed into the back seat of the police car.
"We’ll just have to go bail him out." Deryck whispered.
"That might take a while. That was no good cop."

dumb cops, its not like he's really interfering with the police's search. it'd be one thing if he's always at the station giving the cops shit for not looking for her, but he's not doing that. great update! can't wait for the next one

Steve sat curled up on a chair at the police station.
"Please let me go. I wasn't involving myself, I swear. I just thought I saw her and thought you'd arrest me if I said anything to you guys."
"It's just 200 hours of community service. That's thanks to your three friends over there who came to bail you out. You should feel very thankful to them."
"They came?!" Steve looked around the officer. Cone, Deryck, and Shannon were at the desk talking to the chief who sighed, then nodded.
They waved Steve over, who smiled slightly, then jogged across the room to join them.
"Hey Steve," Cone said, his voice fake and cheery, "We got you out! Only 200 hours community service!"
"C'mon, let's go!" Deryck smiled widely with the same fake cheeriness.
Cone put his arm around Steve's shoulders and nearly ran him out the door.
Once they were out, he dropped the huge smile and said quickly, "That bastard. 1000 dollarsfor a trespassing charge?"
"That was my bail?!"
"The lowest we could get, too." Shannon sighed.
"We could get him in deep shit." Deryck said, zoning in after a good thirty seconds of staring into space.
"You wanna mess with the chief of police after this shit? No thanks." Steve shout down whatever idea Deryck was dreaming up.
Steve bit his bottom lip hard as they passed a "Missing" sign bearing a picture of Anna.
"It's OK, buddy." Cone gave Steve a quick one-armed hug with the arm that wasn't wrapped around Shannon, "We'll find her."
But Steve saw Cone glance at Deryck with a look that spelled "worry".
Steve watched them exchange the same distressed look for about a minute, then said, "OK, guys, what's on your minds?"
Deryck looked at Cone who, after sighing, nodded, "Well about 15 minutes after Anna was spotted, gunshots were heard in an area about 15 minutes from Mrs. Creedley's."
Steve's heart skipped a beat, then he said, "So what does this mean?" He was looking for confirmation.
"It means that there's a chance, hopefully a very small chance, that Anna was killed tonight," Cone said quietly.
"Fuck." Steve sunk to his knees, "Anna? Dead? No, she's not dead. She can't be."
Deryck and Cibe pulled him back to his feet gently, "Let's get you back home." Deryck's voice was unusually gentle. Steve hadn't heard it so gentle since Deryck's wedding 2 years before.
Tears ran down Steve's cheeks silently. As they passed a convenience store, they saw the employees gathered around a small TV. Blasting from it was the local news.
As they walked by, they heard the following words from the news anchor:
"The missing person case of Anna Von Frances, 25, may have just turned into a murder case, say downtown Toronto residents..."
