Steve allowed his eyes to flicke open, but instantly recoiled when the bright light of the sterile hospital room nearly burned out his eyeballs.
Slowly, prepared this time, Steve reopened his eyes. He looked at his wrist and found the yellow bracelet that he had been expecting. He noted he had tubes stuck up his nose.
He looked up at the rest of the room. Jenn, his sister, and Cone were sitting next to his bed, waiting for him to wake up.
Or, at least, they had been waiting for him to wake up before they had dozed off. Steve smiled a little at the way Jenn's head had fallen onto Cone's shoulder in her sleep.
"Good morning." he said as loudly as he could, which wasn't very loud by his standards but was enough to wake up his friend and sister.
"Steve!" Jenn shot out of her chair and wrapped her arms around her brother's neck, "You're alright!"
"Won't be if you keep squeezing his neck like that," joked Cone, coming to Steve's other side. But suddenly his face went serious, "How did you end up having a sleeping pill overdose. Are you nuts?!"
"I honestly did mean to!" Steve said, shaking his head and tearing up, "I was really tired and the first two didn't work."
"Deryck nearly woke up the whole neighbourhood when he found you. Geez, Steve, you got him so worried that he dragged you halfway down the stairs before realizing he hadn't told me or called an ambulance!"
Steve smothered a smile, "He really needs to work on his disaster realization skills. Remember when Avril nearly died of an asthma attack?"
Cone grinned. (not at the thought of her asthma attack but at the thought of Deryck's reaction)
"So, have you heard any news about Anna's murder?"
"Unless she died by some other means, she's not dead. The murder victim wasn't her. It was a potted plant. Some dude working on his target skills."
"Steve!" Deryck, his hoodie hanging off one shoulder, dashed past Cone and hugged his best friend. "Shit dude, I was so worried."
"I heard."
"Ha. Well your commununtiy service has been cut down to 50 hours. Funny how the law enforcement works around suicide attempts."
"It wasn't a suicide attempt!"
Deryck just shook his head, smiling slightly.
"Community service?! For what?" Jenn looked strict.
"Leave it alone, Jenn."
"Steve, what did you do?"
"Jenn, just fuck off!" Deryck and Jenn had never gotten along.
"Der--"
Jenn was cut off by paramedics passing the room. A nurse ran up to them to see who the patient was.
"Oh my God, it's Annna Von Frances!" she exclaimed in a loud whisper.

"She's my goddamn fiancee!" yelled Steve as Deryck and Jenn restrained him from getting out of his bed.
"You're a little too weak to be running off finding fiancees right now. Cone's gone to check. If it's her, he'll find a wheelchair and get you where you need to be." Jenn said quietly.
"'Where I need to be'" repeated Steve, "Well I need to be doing everything I can to make sure she's alright! I sure as hell can't do all that from a hospital room!"
"Steve, if she's in the same state as the other kidnappees she's fine."
"They've all been unconscious for, at the most, 3 days and show no sign of waking up!"
"At least they're alive," Deryck pointed out as he nursed his aching arm at a good 8 feet away from Steve.
"They're as good as dead!"
Before Jenn or Deryck could come up with a rebuttle, Cone dashed in dragging a wheelchair.
"Steve!" he panted, "She's in room 307!"
Cone helped Steve into the wheelchair, "Hold onto this," he pointed to the pole that was attached to Steve's oxygen.
Steve grabbed it and then they were off. Racing down the hallls, through dooor, until they finally reached 307.
"--exact same condition as the others."
"No, she doesn't have the burn. And the tattoo has strange markings inside it."
"True."
Cone slowly wheeled Steve in.
"I'm sorry, we're examining a patient right now." the doctor said, beginning to usher them out.
"No, please." Steve begged, "I'm her fiance. I've been worrying about her for 3 weeks. She was the first to disappear. Please let me be with her."
The doctor thought about it for a minute, then said, "Oh, alright." Then he looked up at Cone, "But after you wheel your friend in, can you please leave?"
"No problem." Cone replied, and he gently pushed Steve up to the head of Anna's bed, then left.
"Anna." Steve whispered, looking upon his fiancee's face for the first time in over 3 months. He took her hand and tears ran down his face, "Baby, please wake up."
The doctors simutaneously left.
Steve gently sat Anna up to look at the of her neck.
He was taken aback when he instantly understood the markings. It was English, except upside down and backwards. He and Deryck had used it as a code when they were teenagers.
"'Steve Jocz -- mother awakening tube'" A spiral lead inwards from the words to a small glint of silver that he wouldn't have noticed if not for the message.
Hesitantly, he reached for it.
