ok update...ah it's one thirty, i'm going to bed now

I tousled Avril's hair gently. She was curled up next to me on my chair, like a little kitten.
"It could have been worse, right? I mean, he could have told you to scram, to get the hell out of his band and his presence right away," pointed out Avril. We were discussing Steve's reception to Avril's pregnancy. Avril said that she was, as she had expected, glad she had decided to skip the meeting.
I sighed. "I suppose," I said. "But I wish my best friend would have a better understanding of things. He's never understood things between you and me." Avril nodded, as if she were deep in thought.
Both of us sat together on the living room chair together, thinking and cuddling, but not talking. It occured to me then that we hadn't done this since Avril had gotten pregnant. We used to do it all the time, just sit with each other and hold each other.
"Oh, damn," sighed Avril as the phone started ringing. She checked the caller ID. "Oh, look," she said, rolling her eyes. "It's your little buddy." I saw Steve's number flashing on the LCD screen.
"Hello?" I answered the phone.
"Deryck? Oh, good. I was hoping Avril wouldn't pick up the phone...she'd probably hang up on me, huh?"
"Why do you say that?" I asked, confused. Avril and Steve have never gotten along particularly well, but it's not like they hate each other.
"Oh, come on. I know you told her everything I said. Look, you wanna meet at the south end of the pier?"
"Uh, sure. What for?"
"I'll tell you when you get there. Bring Avril, too, okay?"
"Sure. I'm sure she'll be thrilled to go."
"Yeah, right." I could just see Steve rolling his eyes on the other end of the line. "Just make sure she comes, okay? Tell her it's important."
"Yeah, whatever. I'll get her to come somehow." I looked down and saw that Avril was listening to every word.
"Okay, good," said Steve. "See ya in an hour."
"Bye."
I hung up the phone and turned to Avril. "I just agreed to meet at the the Santa Monica Pier with Steve," I told her. "He really wants you to come."
Avril rolled her eyes. "Why, so he can give us a valuble lecture on responsibility? Yeah, right. I'm not going to see him!"
This is gonna be harder than I thought, I realized. "Please, Av," I pleaded with her. "I know Steve said some nasty things, but he's still my best friend. Please come."
Avril eyed me. "Do you really want me to come?" she said slowly. "You want me to meet with him?"
"Yes. It would mean a lot to me if you came."
"Okay. I'll go, but for you. Not for Steve." I nodded as if Avril had established some sort of terms for going with me. I looked at the analog clock above the doorway.
"Well, it's three-fifteen," I said. "We have forty-five minutes to get to the pier."
Avril got up and stretched her back and arms. "I guess I'll go change into something presentable." She was wearing boy boxers and a tank top.
I nodded and said, "You're presentable in anything, sweetie. But put on some real clothes anyway."
Avril kissed me.

Steve and I were sitting at a café in Hollywood.
“Wow,” muttered Steve. “I didn’t think you were going to show, what with Avril and all.”
I nodded and said, “She’s been feeling better.” Fortunately, that was true. Both Avril’s flu and her morning sickness were disappearing and she was much better than she had been a week ago. However, she had opted to stay home. She didn’t want to see Steve’s reaction.
“So...I have something to tell you.”
“Hm?” Steve raised an eyebrow. “Shall I start playing the dramatic music now? Dun da da dun dun...”
“Ha, ha, ha,” I said, rolling my eyes. I took a sip of my Coke. “But, on second thought, perhaps the music isn’t such a bad idea.” Steve started humming obnoxiously.
“Okay,” I sighed. “Are you ready?”
“Always.”
“Avril and I are expecting a baby.”
Steve spit out the mouthful of soda he had been gulping. After gasping for air fora moment, he sputtered, “What?! You got her knocked up?!”
“Yes. And we’re not really sure what to do about it. But I might not be coming to work for a while.”
Steve shook his head. “Aw, man, D...you’re insane. What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking Avril was on birth control.” I ran my fingers through my hair. I had been hoping Steve wouldn’t make such a big deal out of this. The last thing I needed right now was more stress.
“And she wasn’t?” questioned Steve. He looked bewildered. “How could you not know whether or not your own wife was on birth control? You must have been fucking her like crazy since the wedding–how could you have not known?” Steve appeared angry now.
“Steve!” I yelled. A couple people at neighboring tables turned and gave us dirty looks. “Look, Steve,” I hissed, lowering my voice. “Avril was on birth control. I asked her about it a million times. It was a pill failure. A statistic.”
The waiter, who had been standing at our table the whole time, said, “Gentlemen, if you’re quite finished, may I take your order?”
“Piss off,” replied Steve.

and another idea from meh...it would be more recognizable between the characters if you were to do his side in a manly font and her's in a girly font (like they were writing in a journal)
