"Hey Cone," I said cheerfully. "I apologize in advance if Avril seems totally creeped out by you. She thinks you're in the league with Steve, and he got at her again. It's been a week since I told Steve to go fuck himself and he came back."
"Again?" Cone sighed. "Get a restraining order thingy against him. It sounds like he's really creeping her out. What's he doing this time?"
I rolled my eyes. I had almost stopped keeping track of the various offenses against Avril that Steve had pulled. "Calling her cell phone repeatedly and telling her how much he loves her," I said in answer to Cone's question.
Steve had recently switched his attitude towards Avril from overly aggresive and violent to a lost and hopeless romantic. On the one hand, I was relieved that he wasn't out to injure Avril anymore. On the other hand, Avril was seriously freaked out. And I was mad because, well...I'm a male, and Avril is my marked territory. I'd say that her pregnancy counts as my mark.
Avril was coming down the stairs whe she saw Cone. "Hi, Avril," Cone said cheerfully. I could tell he was trying his hardest to be friendly and overcome the the barrier Steve had put up between Avril and the rest of the world. Avril's instincts were causing her to protect herself from anything associated with Steve. She froze and burst into tears at Cone's hello. She turned and ran up the stairs back to her room.
Cone looked really upset. "I'm sorry," he muttered. "I didn't want to make her cry." I could tell that he was being sincere. It felt good to know that not all the people I had chosen for post-high school friends were complete jerks.
"It's okay," I assured Cone. "It's not your fault, I don't blame you at all. Avril cries for...well, for anything lately." I patted Cone on the back. He obviously felt really bad for Avril.
I started up the stairs, calling over my shoulder to Cone, "I'm going to go calm her down a bit, but I'm sure she's okay. Make yourself at home in the den."
"Alright...I'm really sorry about this."
Reaching the top of the stairs, I turned around. "Really, you don't have to be sorry," I repeated for Cone. It seemed no matter how many times I said it, he still felt guilty for Avril's sob-fest. "I'm serious. It's her hormones, she's gone nuts and she cries all the time."
Avril was curled up on the bed in a ball.
"You don't have to get all scared and run away from Cone like that," I told her.
"He reminds of Steve," Avril said in a hoarse voice. I knew her voice was going to be destroyed soon. Everytime she cried, she gave herself a sore, dry throat. "Please," begged Avril, "I don't care if he means well or not. Just keep him away from me for now."
I ran my fingers through Avril's pretty hair. "Okay," I whispered. "But, just so you get the picture, Cone was really upset. He felt really bad that you were crying. Cone's a good guy, Av. He's never been cold to you like Steve has." Avril didn't say anything. "I'll be in the den downstairs," I continued. "Cone and I have some stuff to work on. Feel free to come and grab me if you need anything."
I planted a gentle kiss on Avril's lips. "If you had something to be afraid of, I'd protect you. You may have gotten a funny vibe from Steve. But Cone's never done anything to you, has he?"
Avril shook her head and admitted, "No. I think he just give me flashbacks of the time I spent with you three guys...I'll be okay. I know Cone's a nice guy, I'll try to warm up to him. I just can't handle your friends and all the stuff going on in my life right now."

Av shouldn't be afraid of Cone, because than she would sort of have this freaked out feeling towards Deryck too, right? I mean, bc Deryck, Steve and Cone were all good friends,it shouldn't just be Cone tht gives her Steve filled flashbacks.
