Avril was lying next to me. With her in bed, resting her hand and head on my chest, I felt strangely safe. It was a feeling like what a young child gets sleeping with a teddy bear or a security blanket.
“Are you awake?” Avril’s little voice chirped in my ear.
“Yeah,” I said rolling over to face her. “I was waiting for you to wake up, but you shocked me. Babe, I have to go out for a bit, okay?”
Avril looked confused and hurt. She wrapped her arms around my waist and made a puppy dog face at me. “Where are you going?” Avril whispered in a pathetic little voice that was hard for me to ignore.
I ran my fingers through her hair, while debating what to say. “I just...just have to go out, okay?”
“I want to know where,” Avril pouted. I knew it was hard for her not to know, because usually I did anything she wanted when she pouted. “And you’re going with,” Avril added.
I was shocked. Avril must be out of her mind to accuse me of that, I thought. Unfortunately, I couldn’t truthfully tell Avril that I was going out alone. And even though I didn’t want to tell her who I was seeing, I wasn’t about to straight out lie to her either.
“Just...someone,” I replied as calmly and casually as I could.
“Der, tell me the truth. If you love me, then you owe me some honesty.”
“If I told you the truth, you still wouldn’t be satisfied with the answer.” I kissed Avril lightly on the head. That was the best answer I could comfortably give her. I was afraid Avril would be mad at me if I told her any more.
“Please, don’t do this to me,” whispered Avril desperately. “Don’t leave me. I don’t think I could survive without you, and neither could our baby.”
“I’m not leaving you for good, honey.” I tightened my grip on Avril. I felt so bad for her, and I felt guilty keeping her in the dark like this. Avril was truly worried that I was going to curl up in some other girl’s bed and hold her like I hold Avril.
“Listen to me,” I said, pulling Avril closer to me in a warm embrace. “I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone, and more than I ever will love anyone else. I could never leave you. You are the sweetest, most beautiful woman in the world. And I hate doing this to you, but I don’t feel like I have any choice.”
Avril looked back at me. Once again she was casting me a pitiful glance. The moonlight shining in from the window was splashing onto Avril’s features. Her sea-blue eyes appeared brilliant against her normally pale but now translucent skin. And her light blonde hair was shining and also looked pale. She really is the most beautiful woman in the world, I thought as I squeezed her waist.
I shot Avril an equally pleading look. She gave in. Snuggling close to me, she whispered, “Okay. I trust you, Der. I love you.”
