“Thank you, Avril,” Deryck whispered to me. He gave me a soft kiss, a wonderful kiss that ended up lasting almost 30 seconds. When our lips finally parted, I started to look into his eyes with true love.
I knew I was making the right decision not questioning Deryck any further. At least, I was pretty sure I was right. I loved Deryck so much that I didn’t want to lose him. But I knew that if I couldn’t trust him, I would almost definitely lose him. Deryck gave me one last kiss on my forehead, and a whispered “I love you” before rolling out of bed. I watched him pull on a clean t-shirt and some black pants over his boxers. As Deryck left, I closed one eye in case he was watching me. I wanted him to think I was going back to sleep. And more than that, I didn’t want him to see the tears in my eyes. I knew it was selfish of me to want Deryck all to myself. Whoever he was meeting with, it was obviously important to him, and I was pretty much prepared to take his word for it that he wasn’t seeing some sort of girlfriend. But with no one else in bed, I felt so alone. I had no one to hold me. I felt smaller than ever, and I realized that without Deryck, I truly was a mess. And without Deryck, I had absolutely no one. When I was sure Deryck had really left, I grabbed his pillow and cried on it. It felt so good. Deryck’s pillow smelled just like him, and to me, it seemed just as soft and warm as him. I was almost embarrassed by my reaction to Deryck’s departure. I was so emotional over everything lately, even things I consciously knew I had no right to be upset about. “Get a grip,” I muttered to myself. “You’re losing it.” Even as I said this, I couldn’t help but pull Deryck’s pillow just a little closer to me for comfort. I used the pillowcase to wipe tears from my eyes. God, I’m pathetic, I told myself. Deryck is coming back. I trust him. But inside me, there was still such a nagging worry....
