I loved to drive at night. During the day, it could be frustrating to drive, especially in Los Angeles. But at night, in this case, only two in the morning, hardly anyone was out on the roads.
Plus, driving alone at night gave me thinking time. And I needed to think. I was wondering if I had done the right thing, leaving poor Avril. I’d heard her crying before I left the room.
But whether it was right or not, I was already out. And I knew I couldn’t go back until I got what I needed done.
I turned into the dingy parking lot behind the equally dingy bar.
When I got out of the car, Steve was waiting for me just like he’d said he would be. “Hey,” he said, grinning from ear to ear. He was obviously happy to see me.
I wrapped my arms around Steve in a hug. The truth is, the two of us are much more mushy than we’re given credit for. Steve returned the gesture with enthusiasm.
“You didn’t tell Avril where you were going, did you?” asked Steve.
“Nope. I knew she wouldn’t approve.”
Steve and I entered the bar. Only one other heavily tattooed man, plus the bartender were occupied the place. It obviously wasn’t a popular place, and that coupled with the hour made it a exactly what Steve and I needed: a quiet place to drink and talk.
The two of us slipped silently into some seats and waited for the bartender to notice us. It took a while, he was cleaning out a mug that already appeared to be clean.
“I’ve missed hanging out with you,” Steve finally said, after taking a sip of the beer he’d ordered.
“I know. I’ve missed you too. I would’ve come out here sooner if Avril would let me.”
Steve and I spent the next few hours just chatting. The best thing about the bar was the atmosphere. Steve and I could have an intensely private conversation, and everyone else was either too drunk or distracted to notice, or just didn’t care.
“Are you still madly in love with Avril?” I asked after nearly three hours of meaningless conversation.
“Yeah,” Steve admitted. I noticed that he was blushing. “I really like her. But...she’s yours. I understand.”
I nodded at got up. Looking at the glowing clock behind the bar, I saw that it was five-thirty am.
“I should probably be getting home,” I admitted. “Avril seemed really upset when I left. Want to meet again soon?”
“Yeah,” said Steve. He rose from his chair too. “I’m tied up for a while, how about in two weeks? Same time.”
“Sure.”
Steve and I hugged, then I went out back to retrieve my car. I got in and started the ignition. I was eager to home, and crawl back into bed with Avril.

I sure hope avril doesn't find out deryck went and seen steve oh boy that make avril pretty upset.
