It was one week later, and Deryck and I were back home in Beverly Hills. I was sitting on the couch watching a movie, feeling sick. I had been feeling sick a lot lately. It was torture.
“Av?” Deryck poked his head in the basement door. “You feeling better?” I shook my head. Deryck sat down next to me and started running his fingers through my hair. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “Here,” he added, handing me a plastic bag. “I bought a pregnancy test while I was out. You should probably take it now.”
“I don’t feel well. I don’t really feel like moving.”
“That’s fine. Just be sure to take it soon, okay?”
I nodded and allowed Deryck to cuddle me. I found myself falling asleep in his arms very quickly. Before I knew what was happening, I completely passed out.
When I woke up, Deryck was gone. I was awfully upset. I looked at where he had been on the couch. The pregnancy test was sitting there, with a note that said, “Went to hang with Steve. Take this while I’m out if you can. I love you –Deryck.”
I got off the couch and stretched. My back ached from sleeping while sitting up. I looked at the pregnancy test and muttered to myself, “I guess I’d better take this and get it over with.” I picked up the box and staggered into the bathroom.
It felt like my body was still in sleep mode. My eyelids were dropping, and even as I locked the bathroom door, I found myself thinking of nothing but how much I wanted to take I nap. I glanced at my watch and realized I had been asleep almost four hours. That’s weird, I thought. I went to bad early last night. How could I still be tired?
Glancing at the pregnancy test, I realized I had to squint to make out to instructions. My eyes were filling with sleep, making the words on the back of the box a blur. I managed to decipher the test and to pee on the stick without incident. I wondered if I should attempt to keep myself awake long enough to wait for the results.
“Oh, fuck it,” I said out loud to no one in particular. “It’ll be here in a couple hours. I’m going to bed.” I went to my bedroom. Collapsing on the bed, I wondered what I should do if I really was pregnant. I was too tired to think about it, so I crawled under the covers and fell asleep.
