Why is she too young to have tests at 21? You're not too young at, like, 15...

well what i meant is stuff like amniocentesis, you're allowed to have it but it's not considered needed unless you're 35 or over

The impatient ring of the telephone filled my bedroom. I sighed and picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“I need to talk to Deryck.”
“Yeah, whatever.” I rolled my eyes. “Der, it’s Steve again!” I called.
I heard Deryck pick up the phone on the line downstairs. “I’ve got it, Av–you can hang up!” I put the phone back into cradle. I knew that Deryck was losing his temper with Steve lately. Whether I hung up the phone or not, I’d hear every word he said.
Sure enough, only a few seconds went by before Deryck yelled, “For Christ’s sake! I have to stay with Avril!” I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. It made me feel really bad that Deryck was fighting with one of his best friends because of me. At the same time, I felt so special because he was willing to risk his friendship for me.
Steve and Deryck had been having this argument for a week now. Shortly after being pronounced pregnant, I had realized I had the flu. This was my sixth day being stuck at home sick, and the sixth day that Deryck had skipped out on all of his work to take care of me.
“Good Lord,” I muttered. If this was how Steve reacted to me being sick, I wondered, what was he going to think when Deryck told him I was pregnant? I didn’t even want to think about it.
“Steve, you’re an asshole! It’s not my fault if you’ve never loved anyone!” I heard Deryck slam down the phone. Then I heard him stomping up the stairs, muttering angrily to himself.
“Av, how are you doing?” Deryck entered the room.
I shrugged. I was playing with the ear of a stuffed rabbit Deryck had given me as a get well gift. “I’m fine, I guess. Der, what’s up with you and Steve? Isn’t he your best friend?” Deryck sighed and sat down next to me.
“He just doesn’t get it, Av,” he told me. “Steve’s never loved anyone like I love you. He doesn’t understand that I’d fall apart knowing that you were sick and I wasn’t helping you. I don’t think I’ll be talking to him for a while...if he calls again tomorrow, tell him I can’t talk, okay?”
I felt sort of stunned. Deryck had never asked me to keep Steve away from him. It’s usually that I want Deryck to keep Steve the hell away from me. Steve can get kind of nuts sometimes, and he seems to hate me for some reason. It might have something to do with the fact that Steve feels I stole his best friend.
“Um, okay,” I told Deryck.
“Thanks,” Deryck kissed my cheek. We hadn’t been kissing much lately, for fear that I was contagious. Deryck reached down and started messing around with the bunny’s ear with me. We both like having things to do with our hands.
“So, really, Av, how are you feeling?” Deryck asked again.
“I really don’t know,” I replied. “I guess I just feel...I dunno.” I coughed. Deryck rubbed my back.
“Aww, don’t cough too hard. You’ll wreck your beautiful voice.”
As if I have a choice of how hard I cough, I thought.
“Could you get me some water, Der?” I asked.
“Sure.” Deryck went downstairs to the kitchen. He came up a few minutes later with a glass of ice water.
“Thanks,” I said gratefully. As I sipped the water, I felt some instant relief to my sore throat. The water felt nice and cool slipping down my throat. I kissed Deryck’s cheek and told him, “Thank you so much. I feel better now.”
