Chapter one


It was about seven o'clock at night when Jeffery came to the morgue and picked Faith - his fiancee – up to have dinner with her parents. It's been about two years now since Faith started working with me at the morgue. She was a nice person, quite young, but good at what she did.


I didn't know Jeffery well. I saw him two or three times before, and we didn't say much.


Faith and I were good friends. She used to tell me all her secrets, and I used to tell her mine.


The next day, she came to the morgue looking upset. When I asked her about it, she said: " My mum wants me to quit my job. We had a huge fight…I'll be fine ". The pain in her voice and the anger in her eyes made me feel so worried about her, so I gave her a hug, smiled, then told her that everything will be okay.


Two hours later, Faith was gone for a while. When she came back, I noticed some cuts on her wrists. It was strange…Why would she do that? So I asked her : "What's wrong? "


" Nothing ", she said.


" Are you sure? "


" Yes. I told you it's just my mother ".


It seemed like she was avoiding me, so I thought that leaving her alone for a while would be that best thing to do.


I went home late at night, but I stayed up hoping that Faith would call to tell what was really wrong. As I expected, she did call me. She told me that she needed to see me, so I changed my clothes and went to the restaurant where we agreed to meet at.


Faith seemed so anxious, she didn't sound like her, but later, I knew why…She told me that she found some files under a bed in Jeffery's apartment. The files carried lots of information about some people, and they also carried orders to kill those people….


I tried to calm her down, but I failed. So, I told her to take a couple of days off and that I would cover for her at the morgue. I also told her that I would pick her up in the afternoon to get some help for her.

Chapter Two

I couldn't sleep well that night. I spent the rest of the night thinking about what I should do…I didn't want to tell the police about Jeffery, but if I didn't, someone could die because of me. I just didn't want to hurt Faith. I thought that what she knew about Jeffery was enough, she didn't need anything else to make her day worse.

I went to the morgue in the morning and found a new man instead of Faith. " Dr. Jason Bolton? ", he asked.

" Yes…Can I help you? ", I said. " I'm Ryan Hunter. I'm filling in instead of a doctor. I'll be your partner for a couple of days ", he told me.

I took Ryan and showed him the place. He seemed to be an ambitious young man, but with no experience. He actually didn't do anything more than talking. He kept telling me about himself and his family. I didn't understand – or didn't hear – most of what he said. I was trying to concentrate, I had lots of work to do. Then, I remembered Faith. I called her, but she didn't answer. It was weird. It was almost 11 o'clock. I thought that she might be sleeping, so I waited and called her again, but still, she didn't answer…Later, work made me too busy to think about her.

I hated working with Ryan. He made me so tired, he couldn't do a thing. An hour later, I found him in the bathroom, vomiting. I still don't know how he passed college. It was like the first time in his life to see a corpse. That made me remember Faith, but I couldn't go and leave him alone in the morgue, so I called a doctor who sometimes took the night shifts. He agreed to work instead of me that day, he just wanted me to give him a ride home after work was done. I agreed, I had to.

I told Ryan about the doctor he'd work with for the rest of the day. I waited for the doctor and when he came, I called Faith. She didn't answer…I got worried. I went out of the morgue and was about to get into my car when an ambulance stoped infront of the morgue. I signed that I received the corpse and took it into the morgue. Ryan raised the blanket which was over the body. " Female, white, caucasian. About 25 years old. Shot in the back of the head ", Ryan said. The other doctor took a look at the corpse and said to me : " You need to take a look at this ". I walked to the bed where the body lied and looked. Faith was lying there….

Chapter Three


Jeffery was sleeping when the telephone rang. It was I who called. I didn't know how to break the news, I just had to.

Jeffery sounded very strange. He didn't ask me as much questions as I thought he would. He ended the phone call quickly, then after about twenty minutes, I called him again, but he wasn't home…..
Now that Jeffery took the news that way, all I could think of was how to tell Faith's parents, so I tried to calm down. I called Mr. Albert, but still I didn't know what to say. Hearing that his daughter was killed wouldn't be easy for him, he loved Faith so much….I just didn't know what to do.
Mrs. Albert picked up the phone….I had to say something, so I said that I would stop by….
All the way to their house, I was thinking about what to say. It's hard to make someone accept something you don't want to accept. But I had to tell them, and I had to accept what happened.
I arrived, and I received a warm welcome, then Mr. Albert asked me why Faith didn't come with me.
" Well…I was working, and - you know, Faith took the day off. And there was this ambulance and… ", I said.
" What are you trying to say, son? ", Mr. Albert asked.
" I don't actually know how to say this, but…When I was at the morgue, an ambulance came and…Faith was there ". I felt relieved after I said it. I was also afraid that they might not understand what I said, so I'd have to say it again.
Mr. Albert stayed in his chair, motionless. Mrs. Albert was in shock…. I didn't know what to do or say, I just wanted to go to the morgue and see Faith, probably for the last time. So I just ran out of the house, crying.
I reached the morgue and found two police officers. They kept asking me questions about Faith. I didn't mention what Jeffery's real job was. I wanted to talk to him about it first. Then I asked the officers if I could help my colleague - Dr. Russel - with Faith. Russel refused due to my psychological state, but later, he agreed after he realised how much I wanted to do it.

A while later, Mr. and Mrs. Albert came to the morgue, but still, Jeffery didn't show up. I tried not to break down…I just couldn't handle seeing Mr. and Mrs. Albert there. So, I told Russel that we would start the work after an hour, then I left the morgue, but I didn't know where to go….
