Chapter Three

My big fat mouth is the reason I’m sitting in my office at seven p.m. on a Friday night.

Greeley is making me stay here until I find something scandal-worthy about Avril Lavigne. I’ve Googled every possible thing about her; my eyes are burning from staring out the computer screen.

I haven’t come up with anything. Nothing worth an article, at least. Anything decent has already been written about. The only small thing of interest is the number of band mates who have left, but that shouldn’t be unusual for a solo pop singer.

“This sucks,” I mutter. I rub my eyes and stare at the News section of Avrilbandaids.com.

I’ll check her website, and then I’m through, I decide. This is ridiculous.

I log onto the official Avril Lavigne website and peruse it for a few minutes. In the management and representation section, the personal assistant section is blank. I remember reading about that on some gossip blog.

“Got anything for me?”

I jump in my seat and twist around. Greeley is standing at the entrance to my cubicle.

I shrug. “Not really. She doesn’t have a personal assistant because she fired them. That’s about it.”

He nods several times. “No personal assistant, eh? Interesting. You can go. And, uh…take the weekend off. Rest up.”

“Are you serious?”

“Didn’t I just say so?”

I hastily gather my things before he can change his mind. But why, I wonder, is the personal assistant thing so interesting to him?

On Monday morning, feeling refreshed and at ease, I walk into the L.A. Weekly offices with my coffee in one hand and notepad in the other. I’d spent the weekend writing my two weeks notice letter. I can’t decide whether to start it with “Dear Fuckface” or “Mr. Greeley, sir.”

Or maybe I’ll just tell him “I quit.” I could march right into his office and…

But as I step into my cubicle, I realize that won’t be necessary. Because Greeley is already there, waiting for me.

I nearly spill my coffee, but quickly regain my self control. I clear my throat. “Did you need something?”

“Let’s go to my office. We have something to discuss.” His eyes are glittering; that can’t be a good sign.

“Um…alright.” I squeeze past him, put my notepad, and coffee on my desk, and follow him back to his vast office.
