Chapter Two

“How’s this, Mommy?”

Riley applies lip gloss and steps back from the mirror to observe Lilly. She raises her eyebrows at her daughter’s attire: jean skirt, pink-striped shirt, green socks up to her knees, and blue Converses. “It’s…colorful. You’re my own little Rainbow Brite.”

Lilly twirls in a circle to make her skirt flare out. “What is Rainbow Brite?”

“It was this cartoon character from awhile ago,” Riley explains. “She kept all the colors in the world in this little bag.”

“Did she keep blue?”

“Yes.”

“Red?”

“Yep.”

“Ora--“

“All the colors,” Riley stresses and smiles. “What’s Josh up to?”

“How should I know, Mommy?”

“Well, can you check on him for me please? Thank you,” she says as a flash of color that can only be Lilly races out of the bedroom. She always lets her pick out her own clothes.

She glances at the clock; it’s ten-thirty. We should probably leave soon. As she hears noises, she turns around.

Lilly has her arms locked under Josh’s and is lugging him into the room while he shouts his disapproval: “No, no! You go!”

“Here you go, Mommy,” Lilly sing-songs and drops him to the floor.

Josh glares up at her. “You bad!”

“Lilly, I didn’t say bring him in here! And be more careful, he’s not a toy you can toss around.” Riley picks him up. She sniffs and wrinkles her nose. “Ew, someone left me a present.”

“Joshie can’t use the potty like me,” Lilly brags.

“That’s because he’s still little. When you were this age, you were in diapers too, you know.” Riley returns Josh to his room and lays him on the changing table. “While I do this, why don’t you go pack what toys you want to take to Avril’s?”

Ten minutes later, the three are in the car on their way to Avril’s.

Riley peers at the rearview mirror, where she can see both children. As always, the realization hits her with full force: I have two kids. Oh my God, I have two kids with the man I love.

Growing up, she had never thought it was possible. She thought kids were cute, but certainly hadn’t thought she wanted any of her own. That was for people like her sister Angie, who adored kids and started planning their dream wedding at age five.
