Deryck’s gaze fell on a small patch of slushy ice. It was the end of April, and winter was finally vanishing for good.
He looked up when he heard a crash. The contents of Avril’s pencil case were splayed across the basketball court and Deryck could hear the geeky kid’s repeated “I’m sorry”’s from 20 feet away.
Deryck didn’t like the way he kept staring at her. Avril snapped her fingers in front of his eyes to make him stop and he laughed a little, still looking as her as he helped to pick up some pencils.
Deryck strode across the playground at a fast pace, “What’s your problem, dweeb?”
The taller boy backed off slowly, “Problem? I don’t--"
“Deryck…” Avril said gently.
“You think you can just go around knocking stuff out of girls’ arms? Is that how it is? Is that how you think people get girls, dorkwad?”
“I—I didn’t mean to… It wasn’t…” The boy’s shoulders fell as Deryck continued to glower at him. He turned to Avril, who smiled weakly, “I’m sorry.” Then he ran off.
“What was that?!” Avril said, calmly but angrily as she brushed the dirt off her pants.
“He was looking at you.”
“So? You look at girls all the time and no one yells at you.”
“But he’s—he’s—he knocked your stuff out of your arms on purpose!”
“No he didn’t. I wasn’t looking where I was going and I walked right into him. Last I checked that means it was my fault.” Avril squatted and picked up her books and pencil case from the ground.
“But…”
“That was your cue shut up, Deryck. Just because you’re more popular than he is does not give you the right to be that mean.”

Deryck lay in bed thinking about Avril’s words for a long time. No one had ever defended whatshisname before.
“…What IS his name?” Deryck thought about it for 10 minutes but couldn’t figure it out, “Mark? Greg? Paul?” He scowled, knowing he was way off.
He rolled over, trying to get to sleep. But a question kept him awake for the next 3 hours.
“What is this girl doing to me?”
