She hasn't got much time lately, I'm sure she wants to write more, but sometimes school does interfere with writing

Avril bit her lip and approached Deryck, who was uneasily mowing the lawn of the one McMansion in their neighbourhood.
They hadn’t spoken for two months, not since the pencil case incident with that tall boy, but now that it was summer, Avril was over it and she felt that she needed to make things right.
“Wow, you’re mowing the lawn for the Doyles? You must make a lot for that.” Avril smiled.
Deryck glanced over at her and she saw a hint of a grin on his face before he turned away abruptly. “I make enough,” he muttered.
She stumbled backwards a bit, surprised by the harshness in his tone, “Um, Deryck…”
“Can I help you?”
She bit her lip again nervously, “I’m sorry for what happened with that boy from Ms. Wendall’s class.”
“Cool.” He continued mowing the lawn and she had to walk back and forth to maintain any kind of connection.
“Deryck, I know that you’re not really okay…”
He stopped and looked at her and she nearly died when she saw the hurt he had been hiding in his eyes. “I was just trying to help. Then you acted as if I was the worst guy in the world.”
She folded her arms, “I’m 10 years old, Deryck. You can’t always expect me to have the best judgement. Sometimes I don’t know that I’ve done something wrong until, well… two months later.”
“I guess I’m not used to people saying something when I get angry.” Deryck said quietly.
“I guess I’m not used to people not getting violent when I stand up for myself…” Avril mumbled.
“What did you say?” Deryck asked, smiling slightly.
From his grin, Avril could tell that he hadn’t heard anything that she had said. She bunched her hair together with an elastic band before replying, “Nothing.”
Deryck wrinkled his eyebrows, then let it go, “Why are you wearing a long-sleeved shirt? It’s boiling.”
“I--" Avril had to lie, “I don’t like my arms.”
Deryck rolled his eyes and leaned on the lawn mower, “I’m so glad that I’m not a girl.”
“Pfft, you only say that because you don’t want to admit that girls are better than boys.” Avril teased.
“Please do not start singing that Cyndi Lauper song…”
“Who’s Cyndi Lauper?” Avril puzzled.
“You know…”
Avril raised her eyebrows expectantly.
“You know that ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ song.”
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Deryck sighed, “Fine. ‘Girls, they wanna have fu-un. Oh, girls just wanna have fun…’” He did a little dance as he sang.
A teenage boy who was skateboarding a few metres away laughed and whistled mockingly.
Deryck blushed and shoved his hands in his pockets.
Avril couldn’t help feeling a bit bad, even as she giggled, “Oh, THAT one.” She had known what he meant all along.

i'm imagining ten year old deryck dancing and singing... *can no longer breathe*
although they don't really seem to act like they're ten. just saying.

^Deryck's 12. He naturally has a more mature way of speaking than she does and she's attempting to match it.
