Here it is, guys. This is the prequel to my fan fic from earlier this year, Slipping Through My Fingers. Those who read STMF will know that during this time in this parallel universe where Avril was born in 1981, she was sexually abused by her father. I tried to write the fic with that included, but I actually almost made myself physically sick. So I will refer to the abuse occasionally, but Avril will mainly just spend most of her time in the story away from her house or her dad.

The new girl walked onto the snow-covered field of her new school next to her mom.
She had just moved to town and the sadness of leaving behind her friend pulsed through her.
A blonde boy wearing a toque and an oversized jacket over his clothes caught her eye.
He was in the middle of a snowball fight and was hiding behind a small, frozen wall, laughing with a brown-haired boy. His nose and cheeks were red from the cold.
She wanted to say hi, but her mother said, “C’mon, honey, let’s find your classroom.”
She followed her mother, but her gaze didn’t leave the boy. Suddenly he turned around and their eyes met, and he flashed a cute, little grin.
The new girl immediately heard the brown-haired boy’s teasing sing-song voice float through the cold air, “Deryck and the new girl sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
Deryck punched his friend in the arm, “Shut up, Rich.”
The new girl ducked her head in embarrassment and hurried inside with her mother.
She passed by a few cubbies and saw another boy putting some books into his backpack. He looked rather geeky. Skinny, kind of short, dark brown hair cut close to his head, glasses. He turned and gave a shy, friendly smile with big lips and she scuttled to the other side of her mother.
She finally came to her classroom, “Honey, this is Mrs. Elmwood. She’s your new teacher.”
“Hi,” the new girl said with a little smile, “What’s my class like?”
“Well, it’s a 5/6 split. You’ll be in a desk group with one other grade 5 girl and, I’m sorry, dear, but 2 grade 6’s who are the biggest troublemakers in the class. Your desk is over there.”
Avril walked over to the rectangle of four desks that Mrs. Elmwood had gestures towards and looked at the name tags on the desks.
“Tamara… Richard… Der… Der-yick? Der-rike? D-rike?” the new girl’s eyebrows came together, “Mrs. Elmwood? How do you pronounce this boy’s name?”
Mrs. Elmwood walked over, “That’s pronounced Der-rick, dear. His name’s Deryck.”
The new girl smiled a little at the possibility that the boy on the schoolyard could be the same guy, then muttered, “That’s weird.”
The bell rang, “Take your seat, please.”
It took a while for the first kids to come in, but when they did, they all stared at her. A new student was a huge deal in Ajax.
A girl with short brown hair pulled into two tiny ponytails sat at the desk beside Avril marked Tamara.
“Hey,” she grinned, “Are you the new girl? I’m Tammy.”
“Yeah, I am. My name’s Avril.”
