Avril Lavigne was a rebellious, punky high school girl. She frequently got kicked out of class for disrespecting teachers, listened to music and sometimes gave performances in the hallways, occasionally rode her skateboard in the hallways and also never really paid attention to the warning bells (so she was always late to class). Her trade mark look was heavy black eyeliner, stick straight brown hair, a black t-shirt (sometimes paired with a tie), spiked black wristbands, black rubber bracelets, ripped jeans, and black high-top converse tennis shoes. All Avril cared about was her friends and having fun because she knew she was going to be a star one day. And, like all girls, Avril had quite a few crushes. However, one that really stood out to her was a boy named Luke. He was really hot, he always knew how to make her laugh and they were the best of friends. She knew he had been single for a long time but Avril didn’t want to mess up their friendship by having a relationship with him.

Then one day Avril decided to go to History class because New Year’s Eve was a couple weeks away and she thought she finally had the guts to ask Luke to be her date to her friend’s party that night. She goes over to the desk behind Luke, gets a notebook out and starts writing a note to him. But before she folded the note to hand to him, he hands her a note. She opens it before giving him hers and immediately her heart sank. The note read:

“Guess what? I have a girlfriend now =]”

Of course, she wanted to be happy for him, but deep down she knew she couldn’t truly be happy for him no matter who the girl was. So, crumpling up the previous note, she writes back to him on his note asking who it was. He wrote something and passed it back and as her eyes went over the name she developed an ample amount of rage and without thinking she blurted out:

“Ashley Warren?!”

Ashley Warren was just about the biggest blonde-haired, blue-eyed bitch you could find. She was not only a bitch to her friends but to her boyfriends as well. She always acted like she was top dog; that she deserved everything and anything that she wanted all because she’d been rich since she came out of the womb. Avril and Ashley had been enemies since kindergarten when Ashley colored all over Avril’s favorite AC/DC CD and Avril responded by putting glue in Ashley’s hair during nap time.

Everyone starred at Avril when she blurted out Ashley’s name. Then some preppy girl said “You have a problem with Ashley Warren?”. Avril said “Yeah, she’s a bitch, of course”. Mr. Harrison, the History teacher, said, “ok girls, that’s enough with the bickering. Let‘s get back to the lesson.” Avril has never paid attention in History class and she wasn’t going to start today especially with how mad and disappointed she was. Ten minutes later, History class was over and Avril went up to Luke and said, “Are you kidding me? Ashley Warren?!” He responded, “Yeah, she’s really pretty and she seems really nice when we talk to each other”. Avril thought about puking, but decided to hold it in until later “Ashley Warren is a bitch, there’s no other classification for her other than B-I-T-C-H: bitch. She’s always nice to guys she wants to take advantage of! I know what I‘m talking about! She only wants to use you!” Luke had a weird look on his face, almost as if he were disgusted with what she just said “Oh, I see how it is. You’re just jealous because I’m going out with someone and you’re not. Look Avril, it’s not my fault that you haven’t had a boyfriend in so long. You get asked out at least 3 times a week, I don’t understand why you don’t go out with any of those guys but you can at least be happy for me that I’m with someone who I really like and who really likes me.” Luke stormed off leaving Avril standing there looking stupid by the gym. Avril wanted to be happy for him but she just couldn’t be, she knew Ashley and her ways with guys. She’d be with him and only him one week and all over some other guy the next. Finally it was Avril’s lunch period, she talked to her friends about what happened and when they got past almost losing their crappy cafeteria lunches they all said “It’s not gonna last hun, you know that, you know Ashley better than anyone.” Of course Avril knew it wouldn’t last, but she didn’t want Luke to get hurt and plus she wanted him really badly, she couldn’t help but feel sad about this whole thing. Then Avril’s friend Kendra thought of a brilliant idea “You know what you should do?” Avril shrugged her shoulders and said “What? Get some cookies and drown my sorrows in those?” Kendra laughed and said “No no no, don’t be silly. You need to steal him away from her. You know how bad she is, and everyone in our group knows that he likes you. All you need to do is go the extra mile and take him for yourself” Avril thought of this for a moment and a huge smile appeared on her face. “That is probably the best idea I’ve ever heard all day!” Her friends were all excited they said “And don’t worry, we’ll help you with this”.

The next day Avril walked into school wearing something she said to everyone she would never ever wear: a skirt. It was a baby blue skirt that went a couple inches above her knees and she wore that with a fitted Pink Floyd t-shirt. Ashley goes up to Avril with her posse of preps (and Luke) and says “Well well well, look who wants to fit now.” Luke said “Hey Avril, I tried to call you last night to apologize for being such a jerk last night and your phone went straight to voice--”. “Attention all students: there has just recently been a milkshake machine installed in the cafeteria to be used only during lunch hours and before and after school”. Ashley started cuddling up to Luke and said in a whinny voice “Baby, I forgot my money at home today and I really want a milkshake. Can you buy me one please, please, please?” Luke says, “Sure baby. I’ll see you later Av”. And as they walk away Ashley gives Avril a an evil smirk while tucking a $20 into her back pocket. “That bitch!” Avril screamed. As Avril was skulking off to first period, she got a text message from Luke “Just so u know, u look really good in ur skirt today =]”. Maybe there’s still hope she thought. For the next 2 weeks Avril does nothing but focus her time on Luke, calling him about every other night or so, stealing him away from Ashley at various times during school, and hanging out at each others houses. She could tell they were getting closer and she couldn’t be happier. And as Luke and Avril were getting closer, Ashley was getting more and more jealous. Ashley always sent Luke cute text messages, went to special places with him and took him shopping with her. However, Avril didn’t worry much about it because Luke would always tell Avril how annoying Ashley was and how she always somehow forgot her money and had him pay for everything. He also told her that he thought she was cheating on him because she was really good friends with this guy named Brad and he got a more-than-friendship kind of vibe from the two of them.
Then, a couple days before the New Year’s Eve party Luke IMed Avril on AIM and Avril could tell he was really troubled. “What’s wrong?” she asked him. “I’ve been hearing a lot of things about Ashley from everyone.” Avril was worried, of course Avril had seen Brad and Ashley practically making babies in the hallways but she just couldn’t tell Luke, it would break his heart and he might not believe her either. “What sort of things have you been hearing?” she asked him. He replied “Everyone’s been saying that she’s been making out with that Brad guy and some people even said that they’ve had sex too. I just don‘t know what to do about it”. Avril said “Have you asked her about it?”. He says “Of course I have, but she denies everything.” Avril says “Oh, I’m sorry she’s like this Luke. You deserve much better.” He then says “Like you?” she immediately says “huh?” as her heart is pumping furiously. He says “oh nothing, wrong window sorry.” She knew he was lying but she went along with it “ok”. Then after about 10 minutes Avril types “hey are you doing anything on New Year’s Eve?” He says “Well, me and Ashley were gonna hang out at her house, but I could cancel. Why, what’s up?” She happily types “well, my friend is having a party and I was just wondering if you’d like to go as my date. It can be a friend date if you want” He says “ok sounds like fun =]”

The night of the party Avril decides to look her best. She goes through her closest and picks out the dress that she bought for last year’s big dance. It was a beautiful bright green spaghetti strap dress with glitter all over it. She also thought “Maybe I should do something else with her makeup and hair”. So curled her hair and put it in a cute ponytail. Then she thought, “I still want to look like me, not an brown haired Ashley Warren.” So she kept her makeup the same and put on her jean jacket with all her band patches on it and message written in sharpie by her friends. Luke came to the door, in his nice jacket and pants and the coolest tie she’d ever seen in her life. It was a black tie with a skull at the bottom and green vertical lines on it and when you flipped it over it had purple vertical lines and a different looking skull on it. They both looked at each other and he said “Wow, you look amazing. You didn’t have to get all done up for me”. She blushes and says “I just felt like it. And you look awesome too. I know you’re going to let me borrow that tie when we get back to school right?” He chuckles and says “Of course, this is actually your late Christmas present, but I didn’t have a tie to wear”. She says “Awww, how sweet thanks”. So they get to the party and it’s 11:30, they start to dance and joke around with each other while sharing a bottle of beer. It was almost time for everyone to go home; 11:58 pm. All the couples are slow dancing to the last song of the evening (“Iris“ by The Goo Goo Dolls), including Luke and Avril. Luke whispers in Avril’s ear “I really like you and I broke up with Ashley just before I got here. Do you want to be my girlfriend?” Avril was so surprised, she didn’t really expect for it to happen like that but despite her reaction she said yes. They were both so happy and all they could do was hold each other as the other people at the party were counting down to the new year. Ten…nine….eight…seven…six…five…four…three…two…ONE! And it was at that moment that Luke and Avril shared one of the sweetest kisses you’ve ever seen.
