A chill ran through her body as she stared at the marble tombstone. She had nearly forgotten what freezing cold weather felt like in Canada. Living in North Carolina for the past six years, she spent winters with mild temperatures, nothing like what she was experiencing now, freezing temperatures and piles of snow. She almost missed it. She continued to stare at the tombstone as a tear fell from her eyes. Six years ago was the last time she visited him. She meant to come see him sooner, a few years sooner actually, but between school and work, it was hard for her to find time to come home, until now. She bent down and ran her fingers across his name. Matthew Quinn. “I miss you…miss you so bad. I don’t forget you…..I know it’s been a while since that last time I visited you. I’m sorry for not taking time out for you. I hope you can hear…cause I remember it clearly…the day you slipped away...”

Monday morning, Raelyn woke up to the sound of her annoying alarm clock and a weird feeling in her stomach. The kind of feeling that was something was wrong. But she just shook her head and pushed it aside. Second week of college and she was already looking forward Christmas break. This year, her and her best friend, Matt were going to spend Christmas break in The States and going skiing in the mountains and then fly to Las Vegas to go to Avril Lavigne’s New Year Eve Concert. Smiling at the thought of seeing Matt try to ski, she pushed back the covers and got up to get ready for school. An hour and half later, Raelyn grabbed her bag and left for school, still with that weird feeling in her stomach. Glancing at her phone to see Matt texted her yet, like he usually does in the morning, there was nothing. Assuming he probably overslept like he does most of the time, she shoved her cell phone in her pocket.
Throughout class Raelyn checked her phone constantly, waiting for a text from Matt. She started to worry but didn’t know why since it’s not the first time he’s done this before. She figured she’d give him a call during her lunch break, if he didn’t text her soon. Looking at the clock, she prayed he would. Ten minutes before class was over, she felt her phone vibrate in her purse and quickly dug through it to get it. Thinking it was Matt, relief washed over for about five seconds before her heart started to pound rapidly. Instead of Matt, it was a text from her other best friend, Keara, asking her if she was okay. She quickly texted her back asking what she was talking about. But somehow she knew her answer wouldn’t be good. As soon as class was let out, instead of waiting for Keara to replied back, she called her up and that was when she knew Matt wouldn’t text or call her, ever again. As she walked out her to car, she called her mom and she could tell that her mom was crying too. And that was when she just lost it. She fell against her car and cried. People just walked on by and stared at her, but she didn’t care. She didn’t care about anything anymore. She was still leaning against her car, moments later, trying to get a hold of herself, but every time she did, reality came back and kicked her harder.
************************************************** ***********
The rest of week went by in a blur. It all seemed like a bad dream to Rae. It didn’t feel real. He couldn’t really be gone, could he? She spent her nights crying herself to sleep and every waking moment was spent crying too when no one was around. She was nothing but a mess. A crying mess. Whenever people were around, she hid behind her sunglasses, so no one could see how much pain she really was in. She missed Matt so much. Every time she thought about him, she thought she was going to die. She spent most of her time in her room hiding, from her friends, her family and the world. She couldn’t look at their faces because she knew what they were thinking, what they would say. She couldn’t take it anymore. She was sick of people asking how she was doing and saying sorry. Well damn it, she was sorry too. Sorry for the things she never said to him, sorry for the things they never got to done, sorry for not being a better friend. Everything was so different now.
Raelyn stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot red and she felt miserable. It took all the strength she had to pull herself together for today. Since today was Matt’s funeral. She had to be strong and get a hold of herself. She had to do it for Matthew and his family. Matt would be pissed off if he knew she was acting like this over him. With that thought, she smiled. Gosh, she missed that boy so much. She wished she could see him again, but knew she wouldn’t. She stared at the picture of them together, sitting nearby on her desk, taken only a few weeks before the car wreck that took his life. Keara had caught them laughing, she couldn’t remember why, but something stupid more than likely. The stupidest little things always made Matt laugh. Raelyn sighed. Oh, what she wouldn’t do just to hear him laugh again. Tears filled her eyes again as she took a walked down memory lane. Never in her life would Raelyn expect to lose her best friend, especially so soon. The day he slipped away will be a day she'll never find the same again.
************************************************** ***********
Rae stood outside the funeral home and watched the people as they went inside. She stayed in there long enough to see him and his family, then left. He didn’t look like the Matt she knew; he looked so different, yet the same. It was too hard for her to be in there with them. She didn’t want to remember Matt, her beautiful Matt pale and lifeless. One look at him lying there, made everything so real. Yes he was really gone, no, this wasn’t some horrible nightmare that she would eventually wake up from and everything would be okay again. It was real.
Keara walked up to Rae and put her arms around her. Rae saw the look in her eyes and started crying again. She wrapped her arms around Keara.
“Don’t leave me Keara, promise you won’t ever leave me.” Cried Rae.
“I won’t Raelyn. I promise I won’t ever leave you as long you won’t leave me either.” Said Keara.
“I promise.” Replied Raelyn.
And together they stood, holding onto each other as they cried for their best friend.
************************************************** **********
Raelyn was the last one to leave the graveyard. She stared at Matt’s casket, too numb to move. “I didn’t get around to kiss you, goodbye on the hand. I wish that I could see you again. I know that I can’t….cause you’ve gone somewhere and you’re not coming back.” She said. “I keep asking why. I’ve had my wake up! And I can’t take it….not without you here. You slipped away from me and there was nothing I could do about it.....I need you, Matt. More than you’ll ever know.” Raelyn bent down and place the rose on his casket. “Bye, Matthew. I love you.”
She turned and walked away, to begin a new a life without her best friend.

Reason: added title of song
Well there go all the potential votes for my story... That was beautiful. There were a couple of grammar errors, but that really doesn't matter because the quality of writing was excellent.

Wow. I can't believe this has so little comments! It's safe to say this is my favorite so far. Although there are a few I haven't read yet.
Oh man, I hate to do this... again. :/
You must have missed one of the rules, because you're supposed to have the title of your song in the story at least 3 times. (in this case "Slipped Away")
I wonder if Ally will let it go, because it'd be a shame. Especially since this story is just soooo awesome.
This is really getting me into fan fiction. I hope that when the contest's over you will still write some stories for us.
