Kind of short update. I might not update again for awhile, because I'm getting so into my new fic, but I haven't forgotten this story.

Avril's POV

"Hey, it's me. Sorry about earlier," I greeted Deryck as he picked up the phone.

"It's okay." How am I supposed to tell him? How do you break up with someone you're secretly in love with?

"Uhm, Deryck, I'm really, really sorry but...I have to stop seeing you." I began to cry even as I said it.

"O-okay," stuttered Deryck. He sounded really upset too, which shocked me. I had never heard a guy cry before.

"Maybe someday...when I'm older, we can try again." Now we were both in tears. It was so hard to say goodbye, but I knew I had to.

"Okay," said Deryck again. "If that's what you really want...okay. Just...always know I care about you." I can't believe I'm letting a sweet guy like him go. I hope Dad is happy.

"I'll probably be seeing you around," I said softly, dropping my head and sniffling. I knew that with Deryck and I in the same business, it would be impossible to avoid him. "Bye."

"Bye, Avril." I quickly hit the end call button so Deryck couldn't hear it when I started crying my heart out. I wailed in anguish and threw myself onto the pillow. I cried and cried until I fell asleep.

Deryck's POV

No...this can't be happening. I love her so much. I thought she liked me too. How can she be gone? I would ask Avril all of those questions if I could, but I wanted to respect her. I didn't want to become some freaky stalker.

I wonder how stalker-ish it would be to keep her number in my phone. I looked for a long time at the little profile of Avril on my phone, with the picture I had taken of her with my phone at our hotel in New York. For some reason, I just couldn't bring myself to delete the number. I hit the button to lock the number so nothing could ever happen to it. It was all of Avril I had left.

"Deryck? Are you crying?" Cone asked from behind me. He had a sympathetic look on his face.

"No," I denied blatantly, wiping a few tears from the corners of my eyes. Cone sat down next to me and hugged me. It actually felt good.

"What happened with Avril?" he asked softly after we seperated.

"She broke up with me." I looked Cone straight in the eyes. "Cone, I don't think I can live without her. I know we only dated for a few days, but I need her." My friend seemed unsure of what to say, so we just sat together in silence.

Out of the blue, I decided to ask, "What would you do if Shannon broke up with you?" Cone looked horrified at the thought of his girlfriend of three years leaving him.

"I'm not going to say, because I don't want to give you any ideas." Cone shook his head. "But I'd turn into a train wreck without her."

"Have you always felt that way about her? Or am I just a creepy pedophile for falling in love with Avril?" Fuck. I said the L word again. Cone did me a favor by acting like it was nothing.

"I see the way you and Avril look at each other...you have something with her," he said honestly. "I don't really remember if it was a love at first sight thing with Shannon, but when I look at you and Avril it's like you were meant to be together."

"But...she's gone." I can't believe I'm crying. Deryck Jayson Whibley doesn't cry. Definitely not for a girl. Even as I thought this, the tears flooded back.

"She'll come around eventually." Cone hugged me again. I was glad to have his support. "Don't do anything stupid, okay? I wouldn't want to have to let Avril cry on me because you killed yourself."

"I'm not gonna kill myself. Thanks, though...I guess. I'll see you at sound check." That was my way of hinting that I wanted to be alone. Cone took the hint.

"Yeah. See ya later."

As soon as he was gone, I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and looked again at that beautiful girl's photo. Her eyes are pefect. Her nose is perfect. Her skin is perfect.... I forced myself to snap the phone shut and throw it across the room.

There was no point in fantasizing about Avril when I was never going to have her.
