‘Honey, don’t forget my bag on the back seat’ said Avril as she entered their house with Caleb in her arms.
‘Okay’ Deryck replied from the car. ‘Look baby, we’re home’ she said to the baby, tickling his chin. ‘There’s something waiting for you upstairs’ said Deryck as he walked to the front door. ‘Oooh Daddy has a surprise for us. Let’s go’ she climbed up the stairs smiling at the baby. Deryck just watched her and giggled. ‘Oh my goodness!’ he heard Avril. ‘Honey! Did you do all this!’ she shouted again. He ran up to the room and saw Avril caressing the wall. ‘You like it?’ he asked. ‘I love it’ she said with a huge smile. ‘I just thought putting some cartoon characters would be much more exciting for the baby. And some huge soft pillows and the dimmed lights…’ he paused when Avril walked toward him. ‘It’s great, I love it’ she kissed him and placed the baby in the crib. They both stood next to the crib staring at Caleb. Deryck threw his arm around Avril’s shoulder and kissed her forehead. ‘Love you’ he whispered. ‘Now let’s get momma something to eat!’ Avril giggled, ‘Yea, I’m starving’ ‘I made some orders from Koi’s for you this morning, I figured you need some good food after eating all those crappy hospital food’ he said. ‘Honey, I only ate what mum sent’ she laughed. ‘Oh… yea’ he laughed. ‘Well Koi’s is better’ he shrugged. ‘You’re mean’ she laughed, ‘But that’s why I love you’ They left Caleb and walked down the stairs quietly. **** The kitchen had not been used for almost one month. Clean and quiet with large Koi’s containers sitting on the counter. They padded into it hand-in-hand and sat on the stools. ‘I got your favorite chicken and steaks’ he announced with huge smile. Avril just laughed at her husband’s gestures as he revealed the steamy chicken with his famous chef expression. ‘Yummmm’ she uttered. ‘Dig in!’ he exclaimed and rest his head on his palm. ‘You’re not eating with me?’ she asked holding a shiny stainless steel fork in one hand. ‘I am. You go ahead while I make us something to drink’ he said and ran to the other side of the counter. ‘Gosh when was the last time we ate at Koi’s? I miss this’ she said, chewing the chicken. ‘I don’t remember’ he smiled. Avril sat quietly chewing and watched Deryck preparing the special drink. ‘Hun, you lost weight’ she said suddenly. Deryck looked up and then looked down at himself and then look at Avril again. ‘Really? Cause I ate a lot of shit’ he laughed. ‘Yeah, look your dimples are deeper now’ she laughed. ‘Does that mean I’m getting cuter?’ he asked lifting his eyebrows. Avril snorted, ‘No that means you have to eat more, so come and sit with me’ ‘Okay, just let me add this lemon first’ he squeezed a halved lemon into each glass. ‘There you go princess, my special lemon pinched punch’ he smiled and pushed the glass to Avril. Avril laughed and sipped the drink. ‘It’s nice’ she grinned. ‘I’ll have this steak’ said Deryck, sitting himself next to Avril. ‘I’m going to have to breastfeed Caleb’ said Avril looking down at herself. ‘They’re huge’ she laughed. ‘Looks good on you’ Deryck smiled. Avril swatted him and cut some of the steak from Deryck’s plate.
