‘Hey’ said Avril, leaning on the doorframe.
‘Uh…Hey Av’ he breathed in. ‘Looking good’ he said, smiling awkwardly.
‘I just want to say…’ he scratched his forehead. Avril waited patiently.
‘I’m very very sorry about what happened’
‘And?’ Avril crossed her arms.
‘And…I promise not to do it again’ he said softly.
‘Do what?’
‘Bring Deryck to the club when he doesn’t remember you?’ he asked. Avril smiled but refrained from laughing. She could hear Cone choking on laughter behind the bushes.
‘I think you should have a talk with your buddy upstairs’ said Avril.
‘You forgive me?’ asked Steve.
‘A little’ she said. Steve sighed and said, ‘He’s in the room??’
‘Yea’
‘Maybe I should come back later. He needs some rests’ he prompted. Cone suddenly popped out of the bushes.
‘No. You should go up now’ said Cone. Avril watched quietly. She wasn’t mad at Steve. Although, he could have killed Deryck at the pub, she felt nothing close to resentment about Steve. She was actually grateful.
‘Yea, make yourself at home’ she said, pulling the door wider. Steve glanced at the stairs, groaned and then stepped in helplessly.
‘If anything happens…you can eat my chocolate brownies. It’s at the corner of the fridge.’ he said to Cone before ascending the flight of stairs.
Cone rolled his eyes, ‘Cut the crap! Just go!’ he said to Steve and to Avril, ‘How’s everything?’
‘Everything’s great’ she said, grinning.
‘Good to hear that. I’m exhausted!’ said Cone and strode in swiftly before landing his slender buttocks on the couch.
‘Need a drink?’ asked Avril, closing the door behind her.
‘Sure’
‘Tea? Coffee?’ she asked. Cone threw her a "Do I look like a grandpa?" look.
‘Okay. Coke right up’ she prompted and marched to the kitchen, pulling her hair back into a ponytail on the way.
‘Can you hear them?’ asked Cone, resting his head on the cream colored furniture.
Avril came out with a can of cold diet coke and a plate of chocolate cookies.
‘Diet’s all I have’ she said and placed it on the table.
Cone seized the can, snapped it open and gulped in a mouthful.
‘I don’t hear anything, maybe I should go up’ said Avril.
‘You should’ Cone said, nodding his head droopily. ‘Cause for a minute there I thought I heard a neck breaking’.
