Avril left Cone with his monotonous joke and went up. She tip-toed to the room, the door was slightly opened. She peeked in soundlessly.
‘You know how I am when I’m drunk’ said Steve. Avril waited for a reply from Deryck but he said nothing.
‘I see you don’t want to talk to me now’ said Steve. ‘Maybe I’ll come back later’. The door creaked open an inch before Deryck jumped in, ‘I forgive you’. Avril inched closer to the aperture and paid full attention.
‘Really?’ asked Steve.
‘Yea’, said Deryck. ‘If it wasn’t for that fall I wouldn’t have gained everything back’
‘But I could have killed you’ added Steve.
‘But you didn’t’
‘Honestly dude, I’m really sorry for everything’, said Steve.
‘Do you want me to not forgive you?’ asked Deryck and chuckled. ‘Forget about what happened! I’m back now. Let’s celebrate!’
Steve laughed faintly and said ‘Okay!’ The door swung open and they both saw Avril, who was stooping awkwardly and looked stunned.
‘Ermm...so everything’s okay?’ she asked and fixed her hair nervously. ‘I was just about to call you guys for some tea and cookies’ she stuttered.
Deryck knew she had been eavesdropping but he pretended not to.
‘Cookies? Chocolate chips cookies?’ asked Steve.
‘Yea’ said Avril.
‘I’m on my way sweet cookies!’ Steve roared and glide down the stairs.
Deryck was standing at the doorway staring at Avril.
‘What?’ asked Avril, pretending like nothing happened.
‘Happy?’ he asked.
‘You did the right thing’
‘Let’s get me some cookies’ he said, throwing his arm around Avril.
‘That was nerve-wracking!’ blurted Steve, slamming the car door beside him.
‘What did he say?’ asked Cone.
‘He said “I forgive you”’
‘That’s it?’ said Cone and fired up his vehicle.
‘Yea’ Steve nodded. ‘Man, those cookies were good!’
‘What did you say to him?’ asked Cone, steering the wheel at the curve.
‘I said I’m sorry for everything just like you told me to’ answered Steve reverently.
‘Oh’ Cone grinned. ‘Where should I send you now?’
‘What do you mean where should you send me? I’m going with you to the studio. I ain’t giving up my brownies’ he laughed.
‘Great’ Cone rolled his eyes.
‘So when are we getting back to recording?’ asked Steve, gaining some common sense.
‘We’re going to have to wait for Der to get settled down first’ said Cone with his eyes affixed to the highway. ‘I’m sure he’ll be ready in a few weeks time’
Steve nodded, smiled and said, ‘Cool, can’t wait’.

6.30am on the clock. The sun was barely rising when Avril felt Deryck’s arms enfolding her softly and caressing her abdomen gently.
‘Morning’ he breathed into her ears and planted kisses on her neck.
‘What are you doing up so early?’ she asked and turned to face her husband, her eyes still half asleep.
‘We have to shop for groceries’ he said. She squinted at the clock and said, ‘At 6.34 in the morning?’
‘No, you can stay in bed. I’m making breakfast’ he insisted.
‘What are we shopping for?’ she asked and rubbed her eyes.
‘For the party tonight’ said Deryck and kissed his wife on the lips before helping himself off the bed.
‘What party?’
‘For my return’ he laughed as he struggled to remove his pajamas’ top.
‘And who are we inviting?’ asked Avril who was still lying on the bed trying to adjust to the unusual early morning conversation.
‘Our friends and family’ he replied. ‘You’re still sleepy, get back to sleep. I’ll wake you up for breakfast’
‘But what about the preparations and invitations?’ she asked. Deryck hushed her with a kiss and said, ‘Don’t worry. I’ve got it all covered. Sleep.’.
