‘Hello?’
‘Hey Av!’
‘Evan! Where have you been?’ shouted Avril into her cell phone.
‘I’ve been busy with the band. I heard the good news.’ he said.
‘Yea everything’s been so great. Deryck’s home again!’
Evan giggled on the other end and said, ‘That’s great’.
‘Oh yeah, we’re having a party tonight. Please tell me you can come’ she said eagerly.
‘What’s the occasion?’
‘It’s for Deryck’
‘Oh’, he paused and said ‘Sure! I can make it’.
‘Cool!’ Avril shouted.
‘What time?’
‘8pm’she prompted.
‘Okay, so I’ll see you later!’
‘Okay!’
----------------------------------------
‘I’ll be at the beverage aisle’ said Avril to Deryck and pushed the cart toward the aisle.
‘Okay, I’ll be there in a sec’ said Deryck who was picking up tomatoes in the vegetables section.
Avril strode along the long and wide aisle with large bottled drinks assembled on both sides like a throng of army ready to attack. Avril would be the commander, picking out the best from the horde. Pepsi or coke? Diet coke or coke? Carlsberg or Heineken? Or Anchor?or…
‘Watch it Missy!’ shouted a lady with a cart filled with red cumbersome meat and two chicken heads sticking out one end. Avril had stepped on her foot while trying to pick out her ‘soldier’.
‘I’m sorry’ she said and looked at the carnivorous lady dressed in a white dress adorned with small orange daisies around her neckline.
‘Nurse Hilda?’ asked Avril, frowning intensely.
‘I’m sorry. Have we met?’ asked the nurse pompously.
‘It’s me Deryck Whibley’s wife. You were his nurse a few months ago’
‘Oh! I remember! How are you? How is Mr.Whibley?’ she asked cheerfully.
‘I’m good and Deryck is fine too. He’s here actually’ said Avril.
‘He is? Oh, I’m so sorry for being rude just now. I’m under a lot of pressure these few days, everything seems to get on my nerves easily’ she said and smiled. Maybe cutting the meat would help, thought Avril and said ‘It’s ok’
‘Well I better be leaving now. Kids to care for and meals to cook. You’ll understand one day’ she notified and pushed her cart.
Avril shrugged ‘Nice seeing you again’.
‘Same here’ said the carnivorous mother and went on her motherly journey to the 3rd counter.
Avril watched her from the distant and couldn’t help but realize that the nurse is pretty stunning without her uniform. Her luscious golden waves bounced as she marched to the counter, her body almost resembled a perfect hourglass. Wow, thought Avril.
She went on choosing the beverage and within a few minutes Deryck appeared.
‘Guess who I’ve just bumped into’ he said as soon as he got near to Avril.
‘The nurse?’ asked Avril.
‘Yea! Oh you saw her too. I’ve invited her to come tonight’ he announced.
‘Oh, cool’ she said and smiled weakly.
‘So what have you got here?’ asked Deryck and glanced at Avril’s cart.
‘I’ve got some soft drinks and beers’
‘Okay good. I’ve got the vegetables and potatoes and steaks and chickens and…’ he dug into the trolley.
‘I can see them in your cart’ said Avril and laughed.
Deryck smiled and pushed the cart, ‘So let’s get these paid’ he said.
---------------------------------------
‘Hun, I don’t feel good’ Avril said softly, almost limping on the passenger seat.
Deryck placed his palms on her head gently and rubbed her shoulder with one hand and the other on the wheel.
‘Are you tired?’ he asked.
‘I don’t know…I just feel like vomiting and a little dizzy’ she said.
‘You want to see the doctor?’
‘No, I’m tired of that place. I just need some rest’ she prompted.
‘Okay, but if it gets worse your going to the doctor’ Deryck insisted. Avril nodded silently and lowered her seat to a leaning position.
‘Wake me up when we’re home’ she said and pulled her shades over her eyes.
‘Okay, don’t worry I’ll ask Cone to help with the cooking tonight’
---------------------------------------------------
‘So tomatoes in…where are the potatoes?’ asked Cone sporting an apron in the kitchen.
‘Oh damn, I forgot to cut em’ blurted Deryck and slapped himself on the forehead.
‘Dude, you gotta be organized when you cook’ Cone reprimanded.
‘I know, I know’
‘Okay, chop the potatoes and throw them in the soup. I’ll marinate the steak’ Cone commanded.
‘Where did you learn all this?’ asked Deryck.
‘Long story…’ said Cone and licked his salsa drenched finger. ‘My mum likes to teach me these things when I was younger and I gotta say, cooking is a work of art’
‘Right’ Deryck sneered and continued to chop the potatoes.
‘Is Av okay?’ asked Cone, stirring the steaming hot soup.
‘She’s sleeping. She’s just tired’ said Deryck.
‘So, have you put any thoughts on going back to the studio?’ Cone swiftly and unknowingly changed the subject.
‘I have…but I’m not ready yet. You know, I’m still trying to settle things down at home with Av and stuff’ said Deryck.
Cone nodded, ‘I know, family comes first’ he added.
‘Yeah, here’re the potatoes. Now what else needs cutting?’ asked Deryck and handed a huge bowl of potatoes to Cone.
Cone stared at the potatoes with a dazed look.
‘Okay let me do the cutting now. Boy, you need to spend more time in the kitchen’ said Cone and laughed.
‘I’m trying’ said Deryck. ‘Oh shit, its 7.30! I’ll heat up the coal’
‘Yeah go, go’
Deryck ran to the back lawn and assembled the barbeque set hastily. He cobbled the coals and lit them up in a rush, clanking and clinking loudly with the barbeque set.
‘Keep it down would ya!’ Cone bellowed from the kitchen.
‘Sorry’ said Deryck, picking up the scattered coals on the grassy lawn.
‘You okay?’ a voice suddenly called out from the top window of the house. Deryck looked up and found Avril standing by the window.
‘Oh hey, did I wake you up? Everything’s fine down here. Go back to bed hun’ Deryck insisted.
‘I’m coming down to help’ said Avril, still staring down at her husband.
‘Are you sure? You’re feeling okay already?’ asked Deryck with coals in both hands.
‘Yea I’m fine. I’m going down’ said Avril and disappeared from Deryck’s sight.
‘Okay’ he placed the coals in a bag and washed his black hands scrupulously.
Avril was already in the kitchen talking to Cone and munching on carrot sticks.
‘What’s that?’
‘Oh that?’ asked Cone presumably sarcastic. ‘Potatoes, hand-cut by your beloved…’
‘Okay okay I know I suck at cutting potatoes’ said Deryck as he walked in the back door and headed to where Avril was standing and laughing.
He kissed her on the cheek, ‘You don’t have to help if you’re not feeling well you know?’ he said softly.
‘I’m fine’ she said. ‘The headache is gone’.
‘Then you better help me with the steak’ Cone prompted.
-----------------------------------
‘Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!’ a scream surged through the front door, to the hallway and to the living room. Deryck sprang to his foot in an instant and ran to the front door.
‘I miss you guys!’ bellowed Avril and hugged her ex-guitarist and drummer tightly. Matt and Evan had arrived early with boxes of beers and a bottle of wine.
‘Hey’ greeted Deryck and gave them the usual male greeting manner; a hand shake and a bump on the shoulder.
‘Where should I put these?’ asked Evan, lifting the box of beers.
‘Let me take these, should have told you not to get them’ said Avril. ‘I bought tons of em’.
Evan shrugged and said, ‘Well just keep them in case of emergency’.
They ambled through the hallway and into the kitchen.
‘Smells good!’ said Evan as they entered the kitchen.
‘Hey!’ Cone exclaimed, holding up a gravy drenched spatula.
Matt smiled, ‘So you’re the one taken hostage to do the cooking’.
‘Seems so’ said Cone and laughed. ‘I’m almost done here. Av is gonna take care of the steaks.’
‘Awesome’ said Matt, sipping a can of chilled coke.
Doorbell.
‘I’ll get that!’ Deryck bawled and rushed out of the kitchen.
‘Hun! It’s your mum!’ he hollered from the entrance.
‘I don’t remember calling her’ said Avril softly and padded to through the hallway.
‘I called your mum last night’ said Deryck holding the door knob.
‘Hey mum!’ she exclaimed as her mother stepped into the house.
‘How’s everyone? I’m not late, am I?’
‘Everyone’s feeling great tonight’ said Avril and locked her arms in her mother’s.
‘And you’re just in time for some steak’ Deryck added, tagging along behind Avril and her mother to the kitchen.
Doorbell.
‘You guys go ahead, I’ll get the door’ said Deryck.
‘Hilda! Come on in’
‘I hope you don’t mind me bringing my little ones. My husband’s on a night shift tonight’ said Hilda and entered the house with her two children.
‘It’s okay. Hello there’ Deryck bent down to greet the kids.
A car halted on the main entrance. Steve stepped out of the vehicle and waved at Deryck. On the passenger side, a girl in a pink sweater and long blond hair smiled at him.
As they headed to the front door, Steve said, ‘I hope you don’t mind a little extra company. This is Amy’
‘Hey. I’m Deryck’ Deryck smiled.
‘Yea I know who you are’ said the blond, chuckling.
Deryck just grinned awkwardly and said, ‘Everyone’s at the back. We’re having barbeque and steaks’
‘Awesome!’ Steve bellowed.
