Deryck’s POV

I dry my eyes with my hands.

“Yes, please.” I say to her.

She brings the monitor and the ultrasound stuff and puts it in the other side of Avril’s bed. I feel glad that she didn’t ask me to leave the room so she could do the ultrasound alone. I don’t want to leave Avril for anything.

“Dr. Collins said me he thinks the baby is fine, and I’ll just confirm it. You don’t need to be worried.” She says sweetly. But how come can she say to me to “don’t be worried”? It’s my wife the one who is in coma in that bed, and my baby’s life also depends on her life.

Dr. Walsh starts the ultrasound and then she looks firmly to the monitor at one spot. I feel my body freeze. Is there anything wrong? Please… tell me everything is ok… The doctor looks at me and sees my scared face, but instead of give me a pity look, she smile.

“You can relax.” She says. “Everything is fine. This is such a lucky little girl.”

Thank God. Everything is fine… now the only thing we need is Avril to wake up.

Wait. Did she say “little girl”?

“Is it a girl?” I ask amazed.

“Yes, definitely. We can see it pretty clear.” She says smiling and pointing at the spot in the monitor. A girl. Just like I said to Avril I wanted. I have tears in my eyes, joy tears.

“Did you hear that, honey? It’s a girl… our little girl.” I say sniffing and holding Avril’s hand.

“I think that’s it. I’m glad the baby is fine, Mr. Whibley, and I hope your wife will be fine too.” She says and I can see she is being sincere.

“Thanks. I hope that too.” I say looking at Avril.


It’s been 5 hours since the doctor left after the ultrasound and Avril’s condition didn’t change. Dr. Collins came to see her five times and in this last one he looks at me worried.

“You should eat something, Mr. Whibley. You can’t stay all the time like that… you can go there and have some food, I don’t think her condition will change in that short period of time.” He says to me. I don’t want to eat, I’m not hungry. All I want to do is stay here by her side all the time.

“Thanks, doctor. But I’m not hungry.” I say with a weak voice.

“You should… but you know what you need. Won’t you call anyone to tell about her?” He asks. Damn it. I completely forgot about that. I need to call Terry and tell him what happened… Avril is supposed to do a concert today. It makes me feel so bad, because as she is not going to do it, everybody in the world is going to know what happened sooner or later, and people gossiping about it is the last thing I need at this moment. And there is her mom… how am I going to tell Judy her daughter is in coma, without certainty if she is ever going to wake up?
