Deryck’s POV

I’m on the cafeteria staring at my phone. Dr. Collins made me leave Avril’s room and take some food, if I didn’t do that he would not let me stay with her this night. So, here I am, the food in front of me, but I can’t even touch it. I just called Terry and told him everything. He was in shock at first, but then he was really sad and said he would pray for everything be ok.

Now I need to call Judy, but it is so difficult, I was hoping Avril would wake and then the call would not be so bad, but I can’t wait anymore. It’s her daughter, she needs to know. I take a long breath and dial her number.

“Oh my God, Deryck! It was time for you to call! I don’t have news from you for almost three days! Avril said she was going to call me after the ultrasound, but I think she forgot… how was it?” Judy says in the other side of the line sounding happy.

“It was fine… the baby is fine…” I say trying not to show how nervous I am.

“Oh, those are great news! And Guess what? I found a perfect house for you today! It’s big and comfortable, and only 10 miles away from the best hospital in Toronto.” She says excitedly and it breaks my heart.

“That’s nice... Judy… I need to tell you something.” I say calmly.

“What’s wrong, son? You sound worried…” She asks curiously.

“We… we had an accident last night.” My voice starts to fail.

“An accident????” She cries worried. “Is everything ok? How is Avril?”

“We crashed into a mountain, Avril tried to protect her bump and hit her head on the dashboard. She had a concussion and hemorrhaging in the brain. The doctors operated her, but she is in coma. The baby didn’t suffer anything. We don’t know what will happen now…” I’m trying so hard to not cry again.

“Where are you?” She asks.

“At Vilnius General Hospital.” I answer. Why is she asking?

“I’m going to take the next plane. I’ll meet you there. Bye.” She says firmly and hangs up.
