Deryck’s POV

I’m walking for almost five minutes and still don’t see anything or anyone. I continue to walk, starting to lose my hopes. I can’t stay away from Avril for so long. I promised I would be fast and she needs me. But at the same time, I need to find someone. I’m about to turn around and go back to the car when I see a light. A house. It’s like an oasis in the middle of the desert. I open a big smile. Thank God.

I run towards the house and stop in front of the door. I press the doorbell and about a minute after I hear someone unlocking the door. A woman probably in her forties opens it. She is wearing a big sweater and wearing gloves. It’s a really cold night.

“How can I help you?” She asks nicely.

“I’m sorry for bothering you this time of night, but I really, really need help.” I start to say nervously and she nods, like saying to me to continue. “My wife is in labor in the car, the road is blocked by the snow and we can't get at the hospital. I don’t have any idea how to bring babies to the world and she is suffering a lot of pain, I need at least a bed where she can lay down and have the baby. I’m so worried that something bad can happen with her or the baby. Please, I need help.” I beg fighting against the tears that are coming to my eyes. Why everything has to be so complicated?

“Oh my God! Where is her?” She asks me looking worried too. She looks like a really nice and good lady.

“I left her on the car to find help. I need to go back to her.” I say anxious.

“Go there fast and bring her here. I would say it’s your lucky day, but I then I remember the circumstances.” She opens a little smile. “My mom is visiting me this week, and she used to be a midwife before she retired. She can help with the birth, she is an amazing midwife. They will be okay.” She says with a sympathetic smile. A midwife. That’s all that we need at the moment! It’s like God put them on our way. I want to hug her when I hear that, but I need to pick up Avril before anything.

“Thank you, thank you so much, Mrs…” I start to say.

“Sophie, you can call me Sophie.” She says. “Go take your wife!”

I nod and run back to the car. I might have lost some calories this night.

When I open the door I see Avril sweating even more than before. She is so pale and her lips are white. She is in labor for so many hours now, and without any medication to help the pain.

“I can’t handle this anymore, Deryck.” She says with a weakly and low voice. “ I can’t…”

“I found help, Av, everything is going to be fine…” I start to say and she feels another contraction. She closes her eyes slowly.

“Avril… Avril…” I say brushing her hair from her face. “Please… don’t pass out… you need to stay here… you need to push the baby out of you…”

“I feel so weak, Der…” She says in a whisper and I hold her in my arms. “I think I’m going to die…”

Her words make my body trembles.

“No one is going to die today, are you hearing me, Avril? No one.” I say firmly while walking to Sophie’s house. “Someone is coming to the world this night, and she needs her mother more than ever.” I add and I see a tear running down her cheeks.

“I don’t want to die, Deryck, I want to see my baby growing up… and I also don’t want to lose the her, because I feel she is also suffering a lot. I don’t feel her moving anymore…” She sobs. “I’m so afraid…”

“You’re both going to be fine, I know you are.” I say trying not to fail. I need to be strong too. “I’m taking you to a warm place, and there is a midwife there. You’ll be better soon, babe.” I kiss her forehead. She is so weak and cold and I’m so worried. I don’t even want to think about what will happen if she faints…

“Be strong, Av…you have to be strong… you can’t give up…” I whisper to her. “We are almost there…”
