Water dripped from somewhere inside the small apartment, and children could be heard, yelling, and running, in the room up- above.
But they didn't care. Both girls, still soaking wet, just lay there, on the cold, dirty mattress, wrapped up in one another. Completely oblivious to what was going on around them. They smiled at each other. "This is nice...." Avril said softly, breaking the silence. "I mean....nice in a totally weird and uncomfortable way." "Agreed." Angela agreed. "I think this mattress is older than the two of us combined." They both laughed, softly. ".....So....." Avril said, after another few moments of silence...."What do you do around here for fun?" "I have some old records out in the main room." Angela stated, sarcastically. " When I get really bored, I play them backwards and look for hidden messages." Avril nodded. "That's weird." "Yeah, a little bit." Angela agreed. There was a pause. "......Ever find any?" Angela looked at her. "Find any what?" "......Hidden messages." Avril responded, suddenly interested. Angela pondered this for a second. "............No." she replied, flatly. Avril looked dissappointed. "That's unfortunate." "Yeah, it is," Angela said, nodding her head. "But on another note, you told your husband, that you were gonna call him. I don't want him thinking I kidnapped you. He's pretty irrational.......so i've come to discover." "It's 3 o'clock in the morning," Avril pointed out, looking at her watch. "He's probably sleeping. Besides.....I can't really talk to him right now." "And why is that," Angela inquired. Avril put her face in her hands, and let out a sigh. "What is it," Angela pressed. Avril looked up at her, with a worried expression. "..........it's just that.........I'm trying to......not avoid........ok yes....I'm trying to avoid him......" Angela interrupted "Why are you trying to avoid him? What's going on?" "There's something I need to tell him...and you for that matter," Avril said, suddenly very uncomfortable. "But I really don't want to......" "You know you can tell me anything," Angela incouraged. She waited for an answer. Avril said nothing. Angela jokingly looked at her watch. "Any time now...." "You're right," Avril said, sitting up straight on the bed, "I need to just lay it all out on the table......cut right to the chase......no more beating around the bush.............I'll just spit it out......." "You're stalling...." Angela pointed out. "Just say it." Avril turned to Angela,looked her directly in the eyes, and nodded. "I'm pregnant." |
