The Last Concert..
Avril stood at the front of the stage viewing the vast Hayes Arena. It was empty now, row upon row of seats climbing into the distance..
All she could hear was the sound of the technicians slowly preparing the stage behind her..
“ Having second thoughts ? “ said a voice .
She turned to see Joe Wenttz one of the lighting technicians perched precariously on a ladder.
He was grinning at her, Joe had been one of the crew for as long as Avril could remember.
“ Bit late now” said Avril grinning back at him, then added cheekily “ are they actually going to be able to see me for a change ? “
Joe laughed
“ Do you know in all these years, Ive never told you this but it’s all your fault “
“What on earth do you mean “ asked Avril feigning a look of horror
“ You never grew tall enough “ he said, then winked
Avril giggled, she would really miss this, the build up, the mounting excitement as the show got nearer, but she had decided this would be the last show..No turning back now..
She stood staring at the arena, memories playing in her mind..The early days, the bookstores and numerous small shows when all she had to think about was her singing, the talent contest, the
heady days of Let Go, the new world she had entered, the world called show business.
.The follow up albums Under My Skin, The Best Damn Thing, Older But Wiser, and Attitudes.
Her marriage, the collapse and slow rebuilding of Deycks consultancy franchise, the devastating housefire that had destroyed
their beautiful home.
The phenomenal success of what had turned out to be her final album ' Reflections On life ' a success she knew she could never repeat, so had never tried.
Watching her children slowly growing up and the death of little Rebecca..
She was sad that they would miss the last show, Deryck was in Japan and the children, well, the children had their own lives..She would have lots of time with them soon..
Her career had been a rollercoaster of highs and lows and a million memories..Those memories had fuelled that last album, all her emotions and love for her loyal fans had gone into the album..It had spent 23 weeks at # 1 in the Laser Charts, a feat few felt would
ever be repeated..
The memories were still playing inside her head the following night as she stood at the side of the stage, waiting for her cue, the music was loud and the noise of the fans echoed round the vast venue..
Just once more, thought Avril to herself, just once more..
She heard someone cough behind her and turned quickly. It was Deryck, she simply stared at him in shock..
He laughed
“ Go on” he said,” or you’ll miss your own show”
She bounded on to the stage still looking over her shoulder, the lights momentarily blinding her, the crowd deafening.
The second shock was even bigger and took her breath away, right in the middle of the front row, waving and cheering ,were her 4 children..
Jake smiling but as usual looking slightly ill at ease when surrounded by people..
Alice, Jessica and Roxanne dancing and waving at her..
She burst out laughing, the girls were all wearing long blonde wigs streaked with pink and purple in recognition of her successful early 20’s.
She would make this show the best she had given, for her family, her fans and her memories..
After all it was her fiftieth birthday..
