[Quarter of Delirium]

Avril woke up the next morning and found the living room in a complete mess. Her flower pot upside down on the floor, spilled soil smeared on the rug, a couch turned 90 degrees (well that was her rough estimation) and her housemate’s clothes scattered on the floor. What the hell happened here? She thought as she padded across the living room to the closed window. It was tightly closed and secured. She turned to the door. It was locked too. A sudden clanging from the kitchen jolted her. She turned and walked slowly to the kitchen. She gasped at what she saw, ‘Holy!’ she turned her head away immediately. A naked man was pouring a cup of coffee.
‘Oh God! I’m so sorry’ said the man. ‘I thought no one was around’
‘Who-who the hell are you?!’ asked Avril, her hands shaking as she tried to cover her eyes.
‘I’m Shannon’s friend’, the guy said calmly. Avril could imagine him trying to conceal his enormous junk with his bare hands.
‘Where’s she?’ Avril asked again, this time she walked a few steps away.
‘In the room’ he replied.
‘Can you please get her out here and please put something on’
‘Okay, I’m so sorry. I really didn’t…’
‘It’s okay. Just go!’ yelled Avril.

Within a few minutes Shannon walked out from her room dressed in a man’s T-shirt and thong. She was laughing with a toothbrush in her mouth.
‘Shan! Who was that?’
‘I’m sorry, he didn’t know you’re here, He’s my colleague’ said Shannon.
Avril sighed, ‘I thought we were robbed. And his “you know what” almost killed me’
Shannon laughed and said, ‘That’s one of a kind huh’
‘Great, I just lost my appetite for my apple pie’ said Avril, walking into the bathroom.
Shannon guffawed and said,‘Don’t worry I’ll clean up the mess’
‘You better!’
‘And I’ll replace that flower’ said Shannon.
‘No you don’t have to. I hated it anyway’ said Avril, closing the bathroom door.

‘Bing Ling what’s this?’ asked Avril when she found a flower and a note on the counter.
‘Oh a man come and want to give you that’ said Bing Ling, smiling awkwardly.
‘Who?’
‘He say his name is…’ Bing Ling paused to recall. ‘Oh his name Delyck’
‘Deryck?’
‘Yes yes Delyck. Hamsome boy Abril. Your boypren?’ asked Bing Ling curiously.
Avril laughed, ‘No no’. She unfolded the small piece of paper and read the pencil-written message on it;
Dinner at Hut’s restaurant? I’ll wait. 7pm

‘What’s that?’ asked Loretta as she passed the counter.
‘An invitation’ said Avril.
Loretta inched closer to Avril and read the note. She smiled and elbowed Avril.
‘Go for it girl! It’s been a while since you’ve been to a date’ insisted Loretta. Bing Ling was nodding in agreement.
‘I don’t even know this guy’ said Avril.
‘He came here early in the morning just to give you the flowers. You should at least go to dinner with him’ said Loretta.
Avril stood quietly for a moment with the note in her hands.
‘Just go Abril! Go!’ prompted Bing Ling.
‘Okay okay, I’ll go. But don’t put you hopes up. It’s just a dinner’, she finally spoke.
‘We’ll see’ said Loretta and giggled with Bing Ling.

‘Wow where are you going?’ asked Shannon, who is seated on the couch surfing the channels.
‘To a date’ said Avril while putting on her earrings.
Stunned, Shannon muted the television and turned to Avril.
‘With who?’ Shannon asked eagerly.
Avril knew her housemate would not be satisfied with a simple answer.
‘It’s a customer. He came yesterday and I got an invitation from him today’
‘And you’ve only seen him once?’ Shannon snickered.
‘Yup’
Avril shrugged and grabbed her coat.
‘What if he’s some mass murderer or rapist?’
‘Shan’ Avril squinted at her housemate.
‘Okay okay. But if anything happens, just know that I’ve done my best to stop you’
‘How do I look?’ asked Avril, fixing her tied up hair.
‘Hot enough’
Avril sighed and said, ‘Gosh it’s 7.15. I’m late’
‘Are you going to take the bus?’ asked Shannon.
‘Duh’
‘Jake can give you a ride. He’s just around the corner’ said Shannon.
‘And Jake is?’ asked Avril.
‘Oh’ Shannon giggled. ‘The dude in the kitchen this morning’
‘O-kay’ Avril’s eyes widen.
‘He’s cool. Just let him know where you’re going. I’ll call him now’ said Shannon, dialing Jake’s number on her cell.
‘Thanks’ said Avril.

‘Hello’ greeted Jake as Avril open the door.
‘Hi’ said Avril and sat on the passenger side.
‘Where to?’
‘Hut’s. It’s somewhere around the East Village’ said Avril, fixing her coat.
‘Okay.’ He changed the gear and stepped on the pedal.
‘I’m really sorry about this morning. I didn’t know you were around’ said Jake.
‘It’s okay. Shan always forgets to tell her guests that she has a housemate’
‘So how long have you been living with her?’ asked Jake.
‘Almost four months now’ answered Avril.
‘So you’re not local too?’
‘Yeah, I’m from Canada’ said Avril.
‘Really? I was born there but my family moved here before I get the chance to know Canada better’ said Jake.
‘That’s cool. Well you could always go back if you want’
‘Yeah but I could hardly find the time to’ said Jake, turning a corner.
Avril was getting anxious as they got closer to the red neon signboard that says “Hut’s”. She checked her hair and her earrings on the side mirror. She even paused to wonder why she was so nervous. She looked at her watch. 8pm sharp.
‘Here we are’ Jake announced as he pulled over to the sidewalk. ‘That’s a fancy restaurant’ he added.
‘Yea’ said Avril gazing at the translucent entrance door.
‘Have a great time’ Jake said waiting for Avril to open the door.
‘Thanks Jake. I owe you one’ she said before closing the door.

She walked elegantly to the entrance and was welcomed by a gentleman in a black suit.
‘I’m with Deryck W.’ said Avril.
‘W?’ asked the tall man in a weird accent.
‘Yes’
The man squinted at a small booklet on the counter and said, ‘Ah, Mr.Whibley is it?’
‘I don’t know, he only wrote W on the invitation.’
‘Well he’s the only one with a W surname here tonight and he’s waiting at table 8. It’s at the side’ he pointed to the tables on the left of the restaurant and smiled at Avril.
‘Oh I see him. Thank you’ she said and padded to into the restaurant.
