Knotty Poe's
I wanted to write about Avril as a normal human being who works for a living and doesn't have all the luxuries thrown at her doorstep. So here it is
 . I still suck at giving titles  Monday morning. You hate the strain that comes with it and yet still find a way to love it when the sun shines. That’s exactly what Avril had in mind while pouring a cup of thick black bitter coffee. Geared with a pink ironed waitress’ attire, she begins the day being greeted by Poe’s most impolite occupant; her boss. ’30 minutes late! What do you think I’m running here? Poe’s is not you average coffee shop!’ he shouted. ‘I’m sorry Mr. Algert’ she said softly. ‘This is the fifth time Avril. And if you know me, you’ll know that I don’t tolerate tardiness very well’ he uttered and shook his head. ‘I promise I won’t be late again’ voiced Avril with her hands cupped. ‘You’ve said that last week’ ‘Please Mr. Algert, I need this job’ Algert grunted and took a sip from his cup. ‘Alright…alright, one week probation! And if I catch you sneaking in the back door again, you’re gone! You hear me?’ barked Algert. ‘Okay sir’ ‘Now go and clean up the tables’ ‘Right sir’ said Avril and left the small cubicle. **************** ‘Don’t listen to him girl, I’ve been late for more than a thousand times. He’s never gonna fire you’ said Loretta; A Mexican heavy smoking part-time singer and waitress. ‘Well I don’t know bout that. He sounds serious to me and you’re like the epitome of employee of the month’ said Avril, wiping coffee cups with a cloth. ‘He likes to scare new workers to make them stronger’ prompted Loretta with an articulate pronunciation of the letter r. Avril laughed and said, ‘Stronger for what?’ ‘Well you know, customers can be rude and vulgar at times. So you have to protect yourself’ ‘And how can he help me?’ asked Avril. ‘You know what honey, the smoke is soaked into my porous brain. Forget about what I’ve said. Now move this cups up the cupboard’ said Loretta. Avril laughed and began to pile up the cups. |

‘Av! Did you lock the front door?’ bellowed Shannon; Avril’s housemate of 3 months.
‘What? I can’t hear you!’ Avril shouted from the bathroom. ‘Urghh, nevermind I’ll go check’ ‘Huh?!’ yelled Avril. ‘I said I’ll go check!’ ‘Okay whatever you’re saying!’ Shannon ambled to the front door of the two-bedroom diminutive apartment. She turned the metal knob and opened the door. Avril’s keys were hanging generously on the other side of the knob. Shannon shook her head and pulled out the keys. She locked the door and stormed to the bathroom. ‘Av!’ she yelled at the bathroom door. ‘Yeah?’ ‘You left the keys outside again!’ ‘I did? Oh shit. I’m sorry Shan!’ ‘You’re gonna get us abducted someday’ said Shannon. She could hear giggles coming from the bathroom. ‘This ain’t funny Av’ ‘I know, I know sorry’ said Avril. ‘Are you done? I need to pee’ ‘Almost done!’ ‘Hurry!’ ‘Okay okay! Gosh Shan’ Avril stepped out of the bathroom tied in a pink bath robe. ‘Finally!’ cried Shannon. ‘What’s cooking?’ asked Avril. ‘Spaghetti and some chicken’ ‘Someday you’re gonna have to learn to close and lock the bathroom door when you’re doing your business’ said Avril. ‘Pshhh’ hissed Shannon. ‘Who knows I might find a cute guy and bring him in here’ ‘Then bless him if he’s lucky enough to see my shiny California ass’ said Shannon with a boisterous laugh. Avril chuckled and said, ‘You’re disgusting’ ‘Can’t help it honey’ |
