FanFic Contest "Secret Game" Story 4
My dreams, scattered, shattered, and torn, as I walk through these dark corridors which are lined with lockers; light bounces off each and every of the corner of the lumps of metal which surround me. Slight footprints are left on the glimmering, moist floor, and the shadow of a janitor looms in the distance of the never ending corridor. In order to remain deeply within my thoughts and mind I force my converse covered feet to make a quick U-turn, whilst doing so the friction between my shoes and the floor is increased, and a loud, high pitched, squeak, echoes off the bare walls and lockers. My shadow is cast in front of my footsteps as I slowly walk into the darkness which lies ahead. A small line of light shines through the gap in an open doorway, my pace speeds up as I move towards the end of the corridor and stop in front of the faded brown door. The window is smashed and small pieces of glass are still hanging from the sides of the frame, I push the door fully open as if creaks and hits the wall. A narrow corridor sits ahead of me with a steep case of stairs at the end. The paint on the walls is pealing of, leaving big patches of grey concrete everywhere between the creamy-brownness; it’s hard to tell the exact colour in this dull light. A puddle of blood floods the floor as I step further into the unknown corridor; I look down to see that the glass from the broken window has cut through my thin soled shoe. In the state which my mind and heart are in, I couldn’t even feel physical pain, only numbness; I continued through and towards the stairs.
A beam of light appears, filled with dust in the air, as I look up the narrow stair case, a door sits at the very edge of the top stair, I can almost reach it, I move up a couple of steps and lightly push the bottom of the door. It swings open with a slight squeak. As I slowly make my way up to the mysterious room, my eyes are greeted with dust, darkness and an extremely creepy feeling of death. I felt confused as this vibe travelled over my body, there had never been any talk of death of pupils at this high school; but if something happened, everyone knew about it. The town was so small pretty much everyone knew each other. The room which I’m stepping into appears to be a disused classroom, a blackboard is to the right of me, and chairs and tables are scattered around the room; some are on their sides, and up-side-down. Clouds of dust surround my shoes as I take another step further into the room, it’s as if I’m on the moon! I begin to hear an incessant clicking, as if the air was vibrating, it sounded as if miles away, but yet it sounded so close; my mind quickly comes to realise that a helicopter was flying over. Probably the damn cops again. I thought to myself… I don’t exactly live in the best neighbourhood. This then distracted my attention from my previous thoughts, and I come to notice a large hole in the wall, as if something had exploded. It was in the left corner, next to two windows, which no longer had glass in them, but there was no glass to be seen anywhere. The helicopter had startled me slightly, and I’d stopped all movement; I walked over to the hole which was as tall as the height of the room and about 2 metres wide. I peeked through, and saw a large concreted area, covered in weeds and random trash. Below the windows was smashed glass, scattered all over the vacant area.
A sudden feeling of coldness journeys through my body, my knees shudder, and I begin to fall towards to ground, my vision becomes blurred as the ground beneath seems to move towards me. I feel a force from behind me, pulling me, God? Are you saving me? I think to myself. I look around to see a dark figure, only the face was visible. The girls’ small blue eyes are gazing into mine in shock, a long moment of silence passes until she speaks out, “What are you doing?” My eyes fill with tears as she pulls me close and hugs me tightly, her gentle calm voice brushes over my cheek and into my ear.
“It’s all over. Everything. They’ve left me.” The words stutter and shake from my mouth as my former best friend pulls away from me slowly.“Who’s left you? What you talking about?” She looked at me with wide-eyes, and a jaw-dropped mouth.
“Everyone. My family, friends, everyone. My family… they just, left. Without saying anything.” I looked at my shoes, as if ashamed or embarrassed.
“Your friends haven’t left you. Sometimes, friends can be more important than family, just remember that right now.” She reached out to my chin, and propped up my head, allowing the tears to stream down my cheeks rather than drop to the floor. “Look up, smile. Be happy. You’ll have the house to yourself for a while!” A smile was fixed upon her pale skinned face.
“Why are you here, anyway? It’s like three AM.” I questioned, glancing out the hole in the wall, up the moon.
“More importantly, why are you seeming suicidal, here, at three in the morning?” A confused look took place of her smile, slowly followed by a frown.“I couldn’t sleep. I just walked, and walked, and ended up here. I don’t know why. I let my thoughts carry me.” Still staring into light bouncing off the moon, I mumbled out my response.
“Cool. Now let’s go.” The cheerful girl grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the door.
“Go where? I have no where to go! Do you even listen?!” I screamed, letting out the anger built up inside me.
“We’re going to my place. Maybe we’ll grab a pizza on the way… hmm…” She trailed off into her thoughts, placing her finger upon her lips and looking upwards, typical.“Fine.” She pulled me again as we then made our way through the dark corridors of the deserted high school. We stepped out onto the street and paused for a second on the road-side. A firm gripped remained on my hand.“It’s this way.”
It seemed like we’d been walking for miles, when we approached a bridge. All I could see the other side was darkness.“Erm… are you sure this is the right way?” I asked in a whisper, slightly worried.
“Yes. Now come on.”In the murky street-lights appeared a short girl, in a parker style coat; hood up and big boots on, her hair was blowing lightly in the gentle wind. She stood in complete silence; a quick glance was all I caught of her face, and a quick glance was more than enough to give me a fright. A look of depression and loneliness filled the gaze she was posing.“All the miseries are out tonight” My savour whispered as we grew closer to the end of the bridge, and lights began to appear.
“Yep.”
When we finally arrived at Jennifer’s apartment, I crashed out on her couch. My dreams were emotionless, and my thoughts were only field with negativity as I woke up. My heart flooded with warmth and happiness, for the first time in years I was awakening to see a friendly face. I smiled and as I opened my mouth to speak, I heard a whisper, “Hey sleepy head. It’s one in the afternoon!” Jennifer was sitting on the other end of the couch, watching her TV, she’d moved my feet onto her lap in order to not disturb me from my deep sleep. I pulled my legs in and curled up in the corner of the couch.
“You got any food here?” I asked quietly.“Sure!” Before I knew it, she’d bounced into the kitchen and grabbed me some breakfast; she skipped back into the lounge with a slice of toast in hand.
“Thanks.”
“No problems.” As she sank back into the couch I hopped up off and headed for the door. “Hey, where ya going?”“For a walk. I need some fresh air.” For a moment Jennifer’s eyes skipped between me and the TV.
“Erm… if you don’t mind I’ll catch you up? This show ends in like five minutes!” She held up her hand showing all four fingers and her thumb, signalling the number five.“Alright, I’ll be just down the street.” I said as I held up my hand briefly as a bit of a lame wave.
As I walked through the hot, calm, air I begin to feel calm, but somehow less happy. A sudden vibe of coldness took over my body; I got the same feeling as I had the previous night when in the high school. I collapsed to the ground, I tried to put out my hands to break my fall, but I couldn’t move. My face smacked into the hard concrete, I was somehow paralyzed; I could see, think, hear, but my muscles weren’t budging. I saw blood trickle across the side-walk as I felt my eyes grow wide. A long period of stillness passed, until I blacked out.
