Kenya Conflict Update...How Does it Affect Uganda?
Religious Appeal to Resume Talks: At end-of-year peace prayers, religious leaders in Gulu asked Kony to resume talks and stay dedicated to peace. The LRA’s recent attack on a Catholic mission in the Congo have left many worried about Kony’s future intentions. Read more about the religious leaders’ appeals here.
Kenyan Riots: Nearly a week after Mwai Kibaki was elected as Kenya’s president for a second term (each presidential term lasting five years), violence has erupted on Kenya’s streets. Kibaki won by a very small margin, and many in the opposition party think foul play was at hand. Questions about the legitimacy of the elections has raised tensions between tribes within the country, and while the attorney general has called for an independent group to verify the election results, over 300 people have been killed so far in the ensuing violence.
So what does this mean for Uganda? Kenya’s growing instability is having massive effects on bordering countries throughout East Africa, including Uganda. Transport in and out of the country has been minimal making it nearly impossible for resources to leave Kenyan borders. Fuel trucks and food supplies have not been able to leave the borders. Now in Uganda, pump prices have tripled and gas is becoming scarce. In Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, over 80% of fuel stations were out of gas.
But the economy is not the only thing suffering. Bordering countries have become safe havens for those fleeing Kenya’s violence. It’s estimated that thousands have fled their homes and settled in towns bordering Uganda, many with the hopes of protecting their property back home. Uganda’s Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura has ensured Kenyans of their safety. Remembering Uganda’s own violent rules of Idi Amin and Milton Obote Kayihura says, “You looked after our people. It is therefore imperative to provide you with all the necessary amenities until you are free to go back to your homes.”
But the violence seems far from over. Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga, who claims he is the official winner of the presidential election, has asked for a million supporters to come together in a park in Nairobi on Thursday night. His actions, along with continued violence and evacuation, seem to discourage any type of quick resolution.
To read more about the Kenyan crisis and its effect on Uganda, take a look at the following articles:
2007 was for Promises, 2008 is for Fulfillment: Gulu’s LC5 Mayor Norbert Mao wrote an article for The New Vision of Uganda speaking about the hope for the new year. Read it here.
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.
It's sad, because the attention this conflict is receiving will probably diminish, and these poor people will be left to suffer without any help from the international world.

i agree. my country has so much money. people here are so selfish. I told my ICT class i was donating £80 of my babysitting money and one person was like WHAT WHY ??!!! you could buy your self a new phone or nice cloths.. but anyway. there are so many people that van give so much money to help people like these. but they just wont
I can't specifically tell you why, but I think they feel helpless, and seeing this inflicts pain onto themselves, so they attempt to avoid it, thinking that it may just go away. They don't want to be sad, and they get sad seeing these things, so they tell themselves that there's nothing they can do, and everything will be fine. Ignorance is bliss. They don't want these sad things to be mixed in with their day-to-day life. I mean, I don't think these thoughts are specifically running through their head, but I think it's their subconsious reaction.
Or at least that's my theory.

Corrine, dear, if you share my ever-so-lovely theory about people's ignorance to world issues like this one, why don't you, um, donate and get involved? I mean, have you donated already? Are you involved in things like this? I'm not trying to interrogate you, I swear, I honestly want to know. I'm not trying to sound mean. And if you're not really involved, well, don't you think you should? It just strikes me as odd, that someone would share that theory, and have this golden opportunity to get involved, and as far as they can see they, um, don't.
Sorry...

Yeah, this whole conflict is messed up. Actually, the girl my brother went to Uganda with, Steph, her sister is living in Kenya right now. She's going to school there, and they haven't heard from her yet. Really scary situation. They're sure she's fine, but they belive her schooling program traveled away from the riots for safety.
It's sad, because this is how it started for Uganda. Same thing. And the messed up thing is that Uganda has displaced people, Kenya's people are now threatened to be displaced in Uganda, the LRA moved south out of Sudan into Uganda. Now everybody's in Uganda and they're not getting out.
the world. MaxBounty. the world.
It's horrible. It's just awful. Like, stupid fucked up people in a stupid fucked up world. Oh my god.
I really hope whoever wins for president tries to stop this. I don't think we can count on Bush to step in and make an end to this, so hopefully whoever wins '08 will. I know it's a long time, but it's better than nothing. I'd like to see this end on it's own, but I doubt that. Maybe Darfur taught them something. Maybe Rwanda taught them something. I don't know. But I hope they act differently.
I swear, if I were a politician, I would do so much to stop these things. These people, these politicians, they seem like good people. Now, I know there's SO much more to it, but I wish they would do more. I get that there's a science to this, but goddammit there has to be more they can do. I don't get why. I would. I would try so much. They need our help. I mean, it's early. They can end it now before it gets out of control.
I don't know, these things bother me. Like, it just makes me sad. Not angry or resentful, sad. I know that probably sounds so selfish, but I just don't get it. I don't get why we won't do more. I don't get why the world watches. These are HUMAN BEINGS. I don't understand how people can watch this, then go on with their lives as if nothing has happened. I don't understand why the leaders can let this happen. What the fuck is wrong with the world?
Sorry, I'm ranting. This is just really pissing me off.
