As someone who has been in the business for over 20 years, I never stop being amazed at the advances in tecchnology! the reason the Japanese get all the stuff quicker is because unlike the west, whre we tend to make the stuff comply with existing broadcast standards and be BACKWARD compatible, the Japanese make no such demands. The flip side of that is that there's a zillion failed technolgical advances that came to market for a week, a month, maybe a year, and then crapped out. none of you are likely to remember crap like the "ELCASSETTE", or the "Digital Mini Cassette" and too many others to name.
I think that there's only so much that additional resolution can do to impreove the "viewing experience". Will it be a picture with much more information? sure. will that make it bettter? HELL NO.
the next big breakthrough will be 3-D i think. wireless is already here ... no wires between the tv and the wall... and THIN ! Damn, i was at the INternational CES show in Las Vegas 2 weeks ago and there were sets there that were PAPER THIN... and the picture was kickass!
that's part of the reason i love my job still
