I saw it last night.

Holy effing hell it's amazing.

Fun things to watch for: Helena Bonham Carter's boobs.

The movie was not shot in sequence, and she got pregnant part way through (Tim Burton's lessons in filmmaking: do not knock up your lead actress in the middle of filming, boobs change sizes FAST when you get pregnant and people WILL notice) so her boobs go from average and normal to HUGE and like... up in her face because they don't fit in her dress, and then in the next scene they're small again. :P

But seriously... go see it. SO GOOD.

Tim Burton got nominated forrrrr I think a Golden Globe? Something. That's usually a precursor to an Oscar... there's buzz that this might finally be the movie that gets him a nomination.

Yeah, I believe it got 4 noms at the Golden Globes.

For the Oscars, I could see it being nominated for Best Actor and Best Director, plus a bunch of the art stuff, like make-up, costume, cinematography, etc. They're petitioning Helena Bonham Carter as lead Actress rather than Supporting.

I really really don't want to rain on anyones parade but I thought it was really truly dreadful. I was so let down because Johnny Depp is my favorite actor and I usually like Tim Burtons movies.

But for me it was too musical...and I don't even know why but the plot was just too twisted for me.

I could see it growing on some people, but I just had too high of expectations for it to possibly live up.

She had a big role, but her character was a supporting character... I mean, it's called Sweeney Todd, not Sweeney Todd and the Lovably Crazy Mrs. Lovett.

And, apparently there's discussion that this might be the film that gets Burton his first nomination. I can never think of what's come out this year that will be nominated/win, because it's always movies I've never seen anyway, so I don't know who he'd be up against... but it would be awesome if he was. Even though I don't think he would win.

Um. You do know that Sweeney Todd is a Broadway musical, right?

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but can I just ask what exactly you were expecting from:
-an adaptation
-by Tim Burton
-of a Broadway Musical
-about murder & cannibalism?

I've heard people didn't like it because it's nothing like the stage show. I can't give an opinion having never seen it, but I find it interesting that that's why it's not liked by some, whereas the reason Rent wasn't liked by a lot of people is because it was too much like the stage show and staging things like that doesn't work in movies.
