The Last King of Scotland
Anyone else see this movie? It's a fictional story about real life Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada. Even though it is fictionalized, it is a really good film and Forrest Whitaker practically embodies Amin from the charasmatic leader he presented to the media to the erratic and often times psychotic tyrant the real Amin truly was. Anyway great movie and if you haven't seen it I would recommend it.

I agree whole heartedly.
When I went to see it at the cinema, someone coming out commented it wasn't a feel good movie. Can't say I was expecting it to be.

One thing I found that was kinda disturbing about this movie was how well Whitaker played Amin as an outgoing, charasmatic guy that was very likeable and he played it so well that you almost forget Amin was an absolute tyrant which makes it that much more shocking when halfway through the movie you see the true Amin which Whitaker also captured pefectly.

Forrest Whitaker did win the Oscar didn't he?..
It makes sense the way he played him. Too often actors will go for the monster portrayal. The fact Idi Amin was popular at first. Plus tends to take a lot of personality to become a dictator.
I like the whole fact that the protagonist is also very flawed.

Yeah he won an Oscar and severall other awards if I remember right and he deserved every one of them imo.
I totaly agree with you about actors trying to play the monster portrayal and I also like as you said the protagonist is very flawed which makes him more human which in the end makes him more realalistic.
Kinda OT but another good movie was Downfall which was about the last days of Hitler's regime. I liked how Hitler was portrayed as human and at times even sympathetic and you almost forget that he was resposible for WW2 and was one of the worst dictators in history. And then there are the scenes when you see the true Hitler and you wonder how he lived as long as he did.

They show actual footage of the Amin speeches at the end don't they?..Its eerie how close his performance is.
Downfall was on the telly night before I think it was. Was out so missed it or most of it.

Damn, I was so struck by Whitaker's performance. If he won the Oscar, he definitely deserved it.

^ Because the physician is Scottish, and he had some interesting influence on Amin. As to "The Last King," I don't know.
Whitaker received considerable critical acclaim for his performance as dictator Idi Amin in the film, winning the Best Actor award at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTAs.
So he won a lot of awards...
