COMIC-CON 2008: Friday the 13th New Footage and Panel Details


The new and improved horror icon Jason, and those who brought him to the screen have invaded San Diego today. The cast and filmmakers of Friday the 13th came to Comic-Con for a panel and they had plenty in store for us. They even had a little contest before the panel started where you could win an acutal prop machete used by the new Jason, Derek Mears, in the new film.

Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller came on stage and introduced the teaser poster for us and then they showed us some brand new video footage that no one has seen before.

- Amanda Righetti and another kid go into Jason's old houseand when they discover a severed head, teh door closes and a machete comes up through the floor and the kid is dragged through the floor. After that we see a big rapid-fire montage of footage that is capped off brilliantly by showing the new, pro-active Jason, actually running down a victim and slashing him down.

While this footage was brief, it displays how much life they have injected into this series after such a long period of mediocre films. Jason isn't a robot, slowly walking after his victims and somehow catching up with them. He goes after these people with full force and I can't wait to see more of it.

After that footage they brought out actors Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti and the new Jason himself, Derek Mears. They opened it right up to questions from the fans. Here's a rundown of what was said.

- The first question right off the bat dealt with why they chose to go with Jason right away, instead of his mother Pamela Voorhes, the killer in the first Friday The 13th. Brad Fuller answered that, "at the end of the day, with today's audience, it would be difficult to make it believable that Pamela Voorhes trying to kill Jared Padalecki. We didn't really think that we could make that believable."

- When asked if he was going to live or die, Jared Padalecki said he honestly didn't know. He also added, "I was trying to push for the prequel, Thursday the 12th."

- Brad Fuller noted that in this new film we will get the origin of how and why Jason got that infamous goalie mask. "We thought it was a really important thing to show," Fuller added.

- Fuller also said that the film was designed as a stand-alone film but, "if the audience loves the film, we'll rack our brains and try to figure out a way to bring it back." Derek Mears also noted that he'd love to don the hockey mask for future installments.

- Jared Padalecki said this film brings, "a whole new level of scare. It feels very real. It's based in reality and it's not like the slow-walking guy is gonna find us. This guy (Derek Mears' new Jason) is the real deal."

- Fuller said that Platinum Dunes is working on a remake of The Birds, which brought about much applause, and also that they're working on a deal to remake A Nightmare on Elm Street, "but we haven't made the deal yet," Fuller said after another huge round of applause.

- Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti remarked on how physically demanding the film was, but Righetti mentioned that, "it was definitely worth it. These were great people to work with and I enjoyed the job." She also said that, "when you're in it, you don't feel it but when you wake up the next day you do."

- Derek Mears talked about how tough the cast since they didn't want to use stunt doubles. "I thouroughly manhandled them and beat the crap out of them every single day. I asked them if they'd want to get their doubles and they went, 'No no no. It looks better with me so we can get the full shot, so let's do it.'"

I was on the set of this movie at the very end of shooting in June and I have to tell you, I was psyched for this film then and, after seeing this awesome teaser trailer, and the first glimpse at the tenacious Jason, I'm even more psyched. That's all she wrote from Ballroom 20.

Friday the 13th will be coming to theaters on Friday the 13th of February 2009.

COMIC-CON 2008: The Heroes Panel Gives Us The Season 3 Premiere!

This is my first Comic-Con and I heard that the lines were insane. I also heard that each day, everything gets worse, and more packed and insanely, well, insane. I heard from many Comic-Con vets that Saturday was the best for panels, which conversely means it is the absolute worse for the lines into those panels. This was made quite clear to me as I rolled up to Hall H to get in line for the Heroes panel. The panel started at 10:45 AM. I got to Hall H at a little after 9 AM. The line was the biggest human snake I've ever seen in my entire life. And here I thought the Watchmen panel line was nuts. This line made that line look like a cable-access panel line. It literally took me 15 minutes just to walk to the back of the line. I was sure I wouldn't get in... yet here I sit, waiting for the panel to start. When I first walked in, I knew why. There was a decent amount of open space in the back at the Watchmen panel, but they filled that entire space with additional seats. I honestly couldn't believe I got in... but DAMN am I glad I did. Here's a breakdown of what I saw.

- A video was displayed for a new contest at NBC.com where you can choose a new Hero, both of whome can manipulate the space-time continuum. Satniago can speed up or slow down time for himself, seeing every possible outcome in what is to come next. Adrianna can do the opposite, and manipulate the time of the people around her, speed them up, slow them down to her needs. You can vote online at NBC.com/Heroes/Create_Your_Hero/.

- Shown the last of three webisodes. Echo can produce a super-sonic, destructive sound that emits mass destruction, and shit.

- Executive producer Jeph Loeb comes onstage. "I promise each and every one of you that you will want to talk about it," referring to the upcoming season.

- Loeb, in an effort to stall because the elevators are broken and the cast can't come out, starts riling up the crowd, seeing which section of the insanely huge crowd are the biggest Heroes fans.

- Tim Kring comes down with a Blade Runner-esque briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. Inside is a copy of the Season 3 premiere. "You're sworn to secrecy... unless you like it then you can tell everyone." Yes, we were about to be shown the Season 3 premiere!! Here's a complete rundown of the premiere below.

Heroes Season 3 Premiere At Comic-Con



- We open on Claire, sporting a new jet-black hair-do, poiting a gun at Peter, four years into the future. She shoots him but he, you know, stops time and takes the gun and dissapears.

- He shows up in the future where his brother is about to announce his powers when he's shot by Sylar. Peter gives chase, Parkman follows.

- Claire sees it on TV and calls Peter. She wants to help but he won't let her.

- He's in the hospital as they try to revive him and Peter waits. They can't revive him... until he leaps up in bed! The cool title screen ensues.

- We cut to Hiro bored in his office, playing with the clock in his office in Tokyo. Ando comes in, says he's intimidated by his new power. He owns 51% of the company now and has $250 million, but he's bored. He's a "man without a quest," with "no one knocking on my door"... until there's a knock on his door. His father's lawyer gives him a DVD message from his father before he died, about Hiro's destiny.

- Claire is about to leave, presumably to go to Peter and Nathan. Right when she's about to leave, Sylar is at her door. He says he wants her power again, but Claire smakcks him in the dome with a trophy. She tries to escape but Sylar's power seals off the house.

- Claire's looking for Sylar and they play with some horro conventions here, with Sylar coming up behind her... then walking past. Sylar continues right behind her when she slashes at him and misses. It seems Sylar is more powerful than ever.

- We make a very odd cut to Maya waiting with a 2x4 but ends up swinging at Suresh. Maya wants Suresh to examine her. Suresh appears to be giving up, and packing up to go back to India.

- Suresh discovers that these powers are procured from adrenaline, and not a gene!

- Hiro is watching the DVD of his father, who is going to tell him a secret. The secret resides in his safe and if it goes into the wrong hands it could rule the world. He tells him his destiny is not to open the safe and protect the secret.

- Hiro, though, bored with his rich-but-drone existance, opens the safe because he wants to be a hero again.

- An envelope says "Press Play" and the DVD continues with Takei saying not to open the safe. Hilarity.

- Inside the envelope is half of a formula. The fate of the world depends on the safeguarding of this formula. Hiro opens the safe and looks at the half of the formula when it's taken out of thin air. He stops time and follows the trail to try to get it back.

- Speedster, this supnky blonde, is the one who stole the formula, and punches Hiro and leaves.

- Parkman comes to Peter with the gun. Both try to read each others minds and Peter tells Parkman he's from the future. He morphs from his past self to his future self, dispatches Parkman and leaves.

- Nathan Petrelli wakes up in the hospital. He sees his suit hanging up on the door and when Peter comes in, the suit and Nathan are gone.

- Hilarious scene where a reporter is talking about Petrelli's "stable" condition when he walks out of the hospital right in his frame.

- Nathan goes into church and says he saw God and he gave him a chance to do great things. The reporter asks if he was ready to give his statement and sees pPeter, ready to get his gun out. He gives a speech to the family at church and says that we're all connected. At the end he says, "Save ourselves, save the world," and he kneels down to pray. He's about to collapse and Peter catches him.

- Back to Maya and Suresh with Suresh starting to examine her. He has isolated the genetic source of these powers. Says that syringe can give powers to anyone.

- Back to Claire in the closet with Sylar trying to get in. Sylar starts talking to Claire and sees a box with files of other villains. Claire comes out and stabs Sylar and he catches her and does the opening of the forehead thing.

- He starts looking for answers inside Claire's head. Wonders what humans could do if we used 100% of our brain instead of 10 or 20 percent. He takes something from her head and the knife would in his chest regenerates. He puts the top of her skull back on and she heals herself as Sylar leaves. Claire wonders why she's not going to kill her and he says that she's not like the others and said he couldn't killer her if he wnated to. Said she can never die and now neither can he.

- Back to Suresh and Maya and Maya wants her to destroy the syringe and Suresh wants this for the good of mankind. Maya thinks the abilities are a curse. She said if that can't cure her, he should destroy it, "for the sake of one of us."

- Nathan is back in the hospital and Peter shows him the headline with his "coached by God" quote. Nathan is convinced these powers are God's work. Thinks we can be angels, on Earth to do God's bidding. He doesn't want to tell about his powers to the world now. Says they can't be angles if everyone knew.

- Oh SNAP! Linderman arrives in the hospital room, says they're made for great things.

- Nikki is with the governor of New York, who sees Nathan on the news and thinks "he's our man."

- Cut to Parkman who, after Peter's dispatching, is somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

- In Tokyo, Hiro wonders how Speedster knew he was going to open the safe. Hiro says he'll never go back into the past, but goes back to the future, so to speak.He sees future Hiro and Ando arguing and when Hiro is about to strike him with the samurai, Ando does this big laser blast power thing and takes the formula. Shortly thereafter, the whole city starts to explode when Hiro goes back to present.Ando runs up to him and Hiro says we have to find the formula.

- Suresh is sitting on a dock, thinking about throwing the syringe away but he sticks himself with it. He starts convulsing and collapses.

- Back to the hospital with Petrelli's mom there. She comes up to Peter and knows that he's not really Peter and wants him to go back to where he came from.

- A big bald-headed guy is in the underground area where they keep the bad villains and he says he's Peter Petrelli. We also see Claire's father in another cell when he hears his name.

- Parkman runs up and sees a dinosaur skeleton, so we assume he's in, you know, another time.

- Nikki is watching Nathan outside his hospital room.

- Suresh wakes up and discovers he has super-human strength, bending a gun and throwing a man 20 feet. He stands up, holding his hands as we see the traditional "... To Be Continued."

Sure, people may have bitched and moaned about last season, but after watching this season premiere, THIS SHOW IS BACK! This new "Villains" season lokos simply amazing. I'd love to talk about it more but the cast just came back to field a few questions.

Petrelli's mom is now a regular cast member and we'll be seeing a lot more of her. They go down the line and had the cast explain the season in a few words. "I've always liked the word bruhaha." Ali Larter added, "fantastical," and to cap it off, Tim Kring used the word "adrenaline" to describe the show.

The crowd is restless and they go to a lightning round with a ton of really quick questions. Most didn't pan out as they couldn't actually get a question out since they were so excited to be there. A guy dressed as Hiro comes up and Masi Oka does a duel-challenging pose, much to the delight of the crowd.

Obviously, I haven't been to every panel on Comic-Con, but this was probably the longest line at the whole Comic-Con and it was THE BEST PANEL YET. They say Saturday is the biggest day at Comic-Conn and it got kicked off in a huge way. Simply amazing, folks.

COMIC-CON 2008: Prison Break Busts Into Comic-Con

The hit Fox TV series Prison Break is back with an all new season premeiring on Monday, September 1 on Fox. Some of the main players from this hit drama were present in San Diego for the Prison Break panel at this year's Comic-Con event. However, before those stars were brought out, the audience was treated to a very special introductory clip for the fourth season of Prison Break. I assume this is the opening sequence of the season premiere, and it looks like a doozy.

We have Wentworth Miller's Michael Scofield character, speaking in a voice-over, hiding out and stalking his prey that is Paul Kellerman (Paul Adelstein) and Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney). After some cat-and-mouse trickery, with Scofield catching up to the duo, bent on avenging the death of Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies), we get quite the bombshell dropped on us: Sara isn't really dead after all.

This was only a half-hour panel and this was the first panel that I had seen that didn't even have a moderator, which was both odd and pretty damn cool. The panel walked out onto the stage to rip-roaring applause. Present on the panel were executive producers Matt Olmstead and Dawn Parouse and executive producer/director Kevin Hooks along with stars Dominic Purcell and the resurrected Sarah Wayne Callies. The floor was immediately open for questions, and the fans let them fly. Here's a sampling of what went down at this panel:

- When a fan asked about the challenges of the show continuing on, given its format of breaking out of prison and then fleeing, and if they had planned for the show to go on for many season. Purcell even admitted that it was an "unrealistic world that is Prison Break" but that "once we buy into that, the show can go on forever." One of the producers also added that, "There are a lot of prisons in the United States."

- There was quite a groundswell of support for the return of Sarah Wayne Callies' character, Dr. Sara Trancedi and when asked when we might expect a "renunion that we've all been waiting for" with Sara and Michael Scofield, she reminded us, from the back of her nameplate that, "Members of our audience may be under the age of 18," and then seriously added, "Very soon. I don't know if it will be before the first commercial break, but yes, by the end of the first airing."

- It became clear that Dominic Purcell is quite fascinated with cell phones, because at one point when Sarah Wayne Callies is answering questions about her character, it appears that Purcell is checking email on his phone, but we're informed that he's just taking pictures.

- Purcell also was asked about his starring role in John Doe, and whether or not it would return because there was no closure, to which Purcell even said he had no closure either. He noted that the show was indeed finished and that, "The number of people here that come up to me and say, 'Dude, I love John Doe' is just amazing." He also added that, "it was the hardest job I've ever done in my life, by far."

Prison Break returns to Fox on Monday, September 1 at 9 PM ET.

This prequel story traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor, the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja, in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.

FX artist Patrick Tatopoulos, who developed the creatures for the first two films, is directing.


32 New Tropic Thunder Pictures

Paramount Pictures has just unleashed 20 new photos from their upcoming war comedy, Tropic Thunder, which will hit theaters on August 18. The film stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Nick Nolte.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Prequel Comic Reveals Villain of the New Movie

IDW Publishing is giving fans of Transformers the chance to find out more about the upcoming sequel film Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, in the form of a five-issue miniseries titled Transformers: Destiny. Speaking to MTV, IDW revealed that the comic will bridge Transformers with Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, and will reveal who 'The Fallen' in the title actually is.

And the exciting thing? The Fallen is neither Megatron returned, or Starscream. Instead it's an all new Transformers character named, appropriately enough, The Fallen.

"[We're going to] explore the background of The Fallen - the main villain of the movie - as well as expand on the 'Reign of Starscream' story that we're doing and tie everything in to what this next movie is going to be," explained writer Chris Mowry, who partners on the book with artist Alex Milne. "The next movie starts out with just tons of action and there's obviously going to be a lot of questions, so we're hoping to answer some of those beforehand."

Mowry hasn't been in direct contact with the screenwriters of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, but is one of the lucky few individuals who has read their entire script. Mowry explains that this was done to both ensure continuity and to keep the comic from stepping on the plot of the film.

"We had this really ambitious script done where there were a lot of fan-favorites in there. [But] some of them are going to be making an appearance in the second movie so they asked us not to use those, which is understandable."

Transformers: Destiny will roll out in December, 2009, giving fans plenty of time to anticipate the release of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen on June 28, 2009.

Guillermo Del Toro Remakes Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Guillermo del Toro and Miramax are set to remake the horror-thriller telefilm Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Comic book artist-writer Troy Nixey makes his feature directorial debut with the adaptation of ABC's 1973 cult classic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Del Toro is adapting Nigel McKeand's teleplay with Matthew Robbins, his writing partner on the 1997 horror film Mimic for Miramax's former genre label Dimension.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.

The film is in its early stages; research and development of the monsters hasn't begun yet, and other producers might come aboard. Moviegoers can expect an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.

Directed by John Newland, the original telefilm gained a cult following through syndication and home video release.

No production date has been set.

Josh Lucas Leads Possible Side Effects

Josh Lucas takes the lead role in Possible Side Effects, a one-hour pilot for Showtime that is written, directed and executive produced by Tim Robbins.

According to Variety, Lucas will play Max Hunt, who presides over a family-run pharmaceutical business.

Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Daniel Thomas and Bill Finkelstein are also listed as exec producers.

Production is set to begin in New York City sometime in the fall.
