Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez Play Fortuna
Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez have signed on to star in the horror thriller
Fortuna, with Barthelemy Grossmann directing from a script he wrote.
According to
The Hollywood Reporter, the story is set in 2100, and envisions an Earth where a collapsed economy and climate crises have eliminated the middle class, leaving a few very wealthy and the teeming masses in severe poverty. To give hope and avoid revolt, the elite create Fortuna, a mysterious game where one in a thousand wins a big payday and joins the upper classes. But their hidden goal to "reduce poverty" by 30% over 50 years comes with a deadly price tag.
Monaghan, Rodriguez and Grossmann will play desperate men who play the game in a nearby tower, despite apprehensions that none of its contestants are ever seen again.
The six-week shoot begins Nov. 10 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Desolate, ghettolike sets are being built reminiscent to 1973's postapocalyptic thriller

There Is No Truth to Any Batman 3 Rumors
We all know that
The Dark Knight has set a new bar for superhero films, both commercially and artistically, so it only makes sense that everyone on the planet is trying to figure out what is going to happen with the (probably inevitable) sequel. Well, David Goyer recently spoke to
MTV to address these rumors. And what did he have to say about the rumor that Johnny Depp, or David Tennant, will play the Riddler? Or that Philip Seymour Hoffman will be the Penguin?
“It’s all B.S.,” he said. “ALL of it.”
Goyer continued, saying “Chris and I haven’t even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself.” Now while Goyer and Nolan haven’t officially bandied ideas about yet, they have loosely discussed themes and ideas. “We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy,” Goyer said. “I wish I could tell you more. There really isn’t anything to tell.”
So, this means that, for the present, there is nothing to announce about a third
Batman film from Nolan and company. No villains are set. No casting has been set. Nolan hasn’t even officially signed on for the third movie yet. Will there be a third movie? Almost certainly, but as of now, nothing has been set in stone.
“If and when [Chris is] ready to talk - we’ll talk,” Goyer promises.
Star Trek's Captain Picard to Appear on Dr. Who
It’s a crossover of epic proportions for geeks – Captain Picard from
Star Trek: The Next Generation will be appearing on the next season of
Doctor Who. According to London’s
the Sun, Patrick Stewart will be making an appearance on the show as a renegade Time Lord known as the Meddling Monk.
Stewart and Tennant worked together over the summer of 2008 in a London production of
Hamlet, and were eager to work together again, which in part led to Stewart being offered the role. Despite his near-iconic status as the Enterprise’s Captain Picard, Stewart says he is eager to return to science-fiction in a very different kind of series. “I have been a fan, actually yes, and I’m deeply dismayed that I was never asked to be in it. I think it’s a terrific series.”
The new season of
Doctor Who, scheduled to begin filming in 2009, will feature the return of classic Who villains the Ice Warriors and the Zygons. And of course, the Daleks will be back, sharing the screen with Stewart’s Meddling Monk. The appearance of the Monk should have a major impact on Tennant’s Doctor, who has recently come to accept the fact that he was the last of the Time Lords. “The Doctor thought his entire race was wiped out and gets a huge surprise to find another member of his species,” says one source from within the production.
Doctor Who airs in England on BBC, and is re-broadcast in America on the Sci-Fi Channel and BBC America. One of the longest-running science fiction shows in television history, it took a several year hiatus before restarting in 2005. Christopher Eccleston played the Doctor on the first season of the new series, to be replaced by David Tennant in the second season. Currently taking a one-year hiatus,
Doctor Who will begin production again in 2009.
The Graysons Isn’t Intended to Replace Smallville
Fans of
Smallville have been somewhat upset about the news out of the CW network that the producers of the show have pitched
The Graysons, another superhero series, to the network. Fears have run high that this pitch suggests that there won’t be a ninth season of
Smallville, and they seem to squash hopes of a spin-off series focusing on either The Justice League, Supergirl, or Green Arrow. Well, no fear -
Smallville producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders wrote a message to fans of the series over at
KryptonSite, reassuring them about the series.
They wrote:
Dear
Smallville fans,
As news and rumors swirl around the development of
The Graysons for the CW, we have every intention of letting you, our fans, be the first to know the reality. Never have we been so committed to the continuing success of
Smallville as we are to seasons 8 and 9. While we are extremely excited to be working hand-in-hand with Wonderland, Warner Bros. and the CW to create the origin story of Dick Grayson, it has never been intended as a replacement for
Smallville, as is speculated in some media. The cast, crew, writers and producers are all working full-steam ahead on a story-line for Clark that allows for seasons of further trials and adventures for our favorite hero. As always, we all have you to thank for achieving eight years of this amazing show that Al and Miles created, and we're looking far beyond!
Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders
Based on what they’re saying, it sounds like the success (or failure) of both
The Graysons and
Smallville are going to be unconnected. Furthermore, it sounds like they have a concrete plan for at least a ninth season of the show – and my be planning on ways to transform
Smallville into a modern-day series about the adventures of Superman.
Smallville airs Thursday nights on the CW. The drama about the early days of Clark Kent stars Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, Aaron Ashmore, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman and Sam Witwer.
