Yeah that's the message that appears whenever that damn virus wants to restart your computer.

W32.Blaster.Worm
W32.Blaster.Worm is a worm that will exploit the DCOM RPC vulnerability using TCP port 135. It will attempt to download and run a file, msblast.exe.

Infection Length: 6,176 bytes

Systems Affected: Microsoft IIS, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP

Systems Not Affected: Linux, Macintosh, OS/2, UNIX

For those of you wondering what port 135 is there for, it is none other than the Windows Update Port! Hooray, thanks Microsoft... not only do you open doors, but backdoors as well. The Symantec website listed below has removal instructions for the worm if you are infected. Also be sure to check Windows Update and look under "Critical Updates & Service Packs", this is where the patch is located for this exploit.

I prefer F-Secure or Kaspersky over McAfee for an anti-virus, tho McAfee is a pretty good program.

oh... it would also be a good idea to throw up a firewall... just my two cents... I prefer Zone Alarm Pro with Web Filtering

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

It's not a virus, it's a Windows bug. Download all the latest patches and this problem will go away. It's been hitting the net for a while now.

You're gonna wanna at least run a virus scan after you patch, too. Just go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for a free online web scan.

"In the first version of Blaster, a countdown clock face pops up and your system gets seriously unstable and restarts (a lot). Some reports say Blaster will launch a denial-of-service attack on the Windows Update website on August 16. Other reports say the attack will happen immediately.

The obnoxious thing about this worm? It'll load itself onto your system if you don't have the patch and you're not running a firewall. Forget about opening attached files online. This one can get ya if you simply go online.

Is Blaster on your system? Symantec has a along with Blaster Removal Tool instructions for removing the worm manually . Check the website of your antivirus software manufacturer if you have a program other than Symantec's."

I was kinda thinking about not updating my 2003 box... and let the M$ exploit infect my computer... just so I can be one of the many zombies to DoS attack M$ on the 16th... Down with M$!

Hopefully this post isn't taken the wrong way, I'm not trying to poke fun at anyone. I'm just curious on how so many ppl got this virus. The patch for the exploit has been out for almost a month. Do most people not run Windows Update on a regular basis?

I have to admit that I'm one of those that always say 'remind me in a week' or something like that... and the next week I do the same thing, so I'm definitly not surprised I got the whole shit as well.
