Levy calls for transfers review


Levy is unhappy with the approaches made to Berbatov and Keane

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has urged the Premier League to review the transfer system.
It follows the departures of strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane to Manchester United and Liverpool.
United were linked to Berbatov for some time and he left on Monday, despite a higher bid from Manchester City.
Levy is unhappy at the manner of the exit and told Spurs' website it was "further evidence of the need for the Premier League to review the system".
Tottenham also lost Keane to Liverpool in July, with the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland striker joining the club he supported as a boy.
Levy added: "This summer we found ourselves having to deal with the unexpected challenge of both our leading goalscorers making it clear they wished to leave the club.

"I have already stated my opinion on the manner in which our players were approached and the nature of the negotiations surrounding Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.
"I have also previously said that we had no need to sell players on long contracts - this no longer remains practical.
"The decisions we took to allow the transfers of Berbatov and Keane were made after close discussions with the coaching staff."
Berbatov joined United on transfer deadline day in a deal worth £30.75m.
United striker Fraizer Campbell, 20, moved in the other direction on a season-long loan deal and Spurs decided not to pursue their complaint to the Premier League accusing United of chasing Berbatov.
The 27-year-old had been left out of the Tottenham team for recent games because manager Juande Ramos felt the Bulgarian was too distracted by United's interest in him.
Levy added: "Juande was clear, and I believe correct, in not wishing to embrace any player within the dressing room that had no desire to play for the badge of this club and for his team-mates.
"Under these circumstances we had no option but to sell these players."

Curbishley quits as West Ham boss


Curbishley took over from Alan Pardew in December 2006

Alan Curbishley has resigned as manager of Premier League club West Ham United.
Curbishley tendered his resignation on Wednesday and it was accepted by West Ham owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson.
The 50-year-old had grown disillusioned at the club's transfer policy, which had led to the summer sales of Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney.
A statement on the club's website read: "We can confirm we have accepted Alan's resignation as it is in the best interests of both parties."
The statement added: "We wish Alan all the success in the future. A shortlist of candidates is being drawn up and an announcement will be made in due course about the new manager."
West Ham also moved to justify the summer departures of Ferdinand and McCartney, stating that the sales were "right for the club" and "based on our best long-term interests".



"In the past week, agreement could not be reached with Ferdinand on a new contract to replace his original deal that had just two years left to run," the club added.
"(And) McCartney handed in a formal written transfer request after failing to resolve his personal reasons for wanting a move away."
Curbishley took over from Alan Pardew as West Ham manager in December 2006 and was promised significant transfer funds to help achieve the objective of qualifying for the Champions League within five years.

He signed the likes of Kieron Dyer, Lucas Neill and Freddie Ljungberg during a summer of lavish spending in 2007, but his terms of reference changed this summer. Gudmundsson told Curbishley he had to reduce the club's wage bill and that money was to be focused on training and medical facilities rather than signings.
Full-back Valon Behrami, who joined from Lazio for £5m, was West Ham's only significant signing of the summer, while Jan Lastuvka, David Di Michele and Herita Ilunga joined on loan.
Yet first-team squad members John Pantsil, Bobby Zamora, Richard Wright, Ferdinand and McCartney all departed.
Technical director Gianluca Nani has been responsible for the club's transfer policy since being appointed in March.
Curbishley oversaw a miraculous escape from relegation in the 2006/7 season, when Carlos Tevez scored the winner against Manchester United in their final league game.
The club finished 10th in the Premier League last season and are currently fifth in the table.
