That's like saying Michael Jackson should have stopped releasing albums after Thriller because nothing will ever top that album. And as much as a whackjob as he's become, he did release some really good, and really successful music after Thriller, even if nothing sold as well. But then again, nothing by ANY artist has sold as well - Thriller is the highest-selling studio album of all time. If you count greatest hits albums, then The Eagles win, but yeah....
Green Day will release a new album as Green Day, they just need time to space themselves from it a little bit. American Idiot came out in 2004, but they were still riding the popularity of it well into 2007. Hell, they rode that album into the ground. Even their most die-hard fans need a break from them now. I predict another year or two before a new Green Day album, but it'll come. Foxboro Hot Tubs is great for that too, because it gives fans new music, but it's something COMPLETELY different.
I got the Foxboro Hot Tubs album on vinyl the other day. I got it on CD when it came out, but that thing was just begging for a vinyl release and then I found it at Hot Topic so I had to get it.
On the Green Day/Blink debate, the difference in their popularity is that while they both started out playing fast pop-punk, but that's where the similarities end. Just because both bands had 3 members and played pop-punk doesn't make them comparable. MxPx have three members and play pop-punk... they're not comparable to either of those bands, in terms of popularity or talent (imo they're better, but far less popular and always have been). I think Blink's problem is that they never really outgrew the fart joke phase. They tried to have more mature songs but could never really pull it off. Green Day grew consistently with each new album, but Blink never really did, so they weren't able to ever expand to a wider audience. The best they got was with Enema of the State, and then their fans outgrew their humour but they kept going... and it just got old.
And Blink's reasons for breaking up are different depending on which member you ask, but none of the reasons had anything to do with popularity, that's just dumb.
