Yeah, I read the interviews. I'm liking the stuff that Mark said about (+44), except that Carol is officially out of the band.
I'm not liking the things he's saying about blink-182 and Tom. He sounds
really bitter. I can't blame him for being bitter to an extent. blink-182 was his life and if it had been his decision, I'm sure they'd still be around today.
Mark seems to think it was selfish for Tom to want 6 months off to spend time with his wife and two-year-old daughter. "After the tour we were on, there were two months off. Wasn’t two months off enough time to go home and relax with your family? Who in the world gets two months off from their job to hang out at home?" I'm sorry, but most jobs don't involve spending several months away from your family, and also, I'd like to think that
that's why they worked so hard in the early years- so they could take time off, so they could enjoy themselves. What was the point of doing if it wasn't fun anymore? If I went to see them, and one of the guys looked like he'd rather be anywhere but here, I'd feel ripped off. Why try to force it if he's not enjoying it? That was a big part of their appeal, they were three best friends who joked around, and just happened to be playing music.
The next big thing happened when they were rehearsing for the Tsunami benefit show. They started arguing again about the time off and a new album. Tom claims that the last thing Mark and/or Travis (it's not specified) said to him was "If your family is going to be your priority, then you better be cool with the repercussions." What the hell is that? I don't think that's something a friend/bandmate/co-worker should say. Maybe I've been brought up incorrectly, but I always thought that your family
should be your priority.
The next day, Tom quit the band. I don't blame him. blink-182 was a democracy, it wasn't fair to Mark and Travis for Tom to make all of the decisions, but at the same time, Tom couldn't compromise. It's one thing for your song ideas to get shot down, that's natural, but it's completely different for two other people to (inadvertently) decide how much time you can spend with your family.
Mark said "It wasn’t terribly long after when Tom quit blink-182 'to spend more time with his family,' that he went into a studio to start his new record." He's implying that Tom didn't really want the break to spend time with his family. What Hoppus conveniently neglects to mention is that the studio is in Tom's house. He couldn't get much closer to his family if he wanted to.
Mark also thinks it's "disrespectful" for Tom to play "Down" at Angels & Airwaves shows. Yes, he quit blink-182, but not because he didn't think the songs were any good. Plus, he wrote the song, he only sings his part, and there's no bass or drums in the AVA version. I just see it as a nod and a thank-you to the blink-182 fans, who make up the majority of the AVA audience. Oh, and it's also filler, because, come on, they only have fifty minutes of material. A lot of times, when bands break up, the different bands play covers from the older, often more successful band. It's not a new thing.
If anyone's wondering what the hell I'm talking about, here's the Mark Hoppus interview that I referenced several times:

Here's the Tom interview (from quite a while ago) that I also quoted:

I'm really looking forward to (+44), and I enjoy Angels & Airwaves. I just hope they stop bitching about each other.
