Pics of her being inducted into the Canadian hall of fame
So glam. So pretty, those washed up hippy looking days are long gone.
ps, that guy with his longer hair is Glen Ballard. If you guys don't know him, at you.
And look at this
Alanis, Glen Ballard and John Alexander - Grammy Awards 1996

She's 33, what do you expect? It's about time that she came into her own.

There was a review posted on aminfo by someone who recieved a promo cd from the album. He obviously can't leak the songs yet but he wrote a detailed review.
1. Citizen of the Planet (4:22) Like SCC, this album starts with a song with Indian flavors, it jumps from very low key and "vibey" to pretty hard rock, and strong layered vocals, then to strings in between the verses. It's not shockingly different than the live version but there is definitely a LOT more to it than what we have actually heard from it before. Sonically this is definitely not really a "classic" Alanis sound. I love the way it sounds, I am really not the best at figuring out lyrics, so unless I read them from Alanis.com I don't know everything she is saying... Also I much prefer the relationship type songs to the society etc, so it isn't my favorite but is still a good listen.
2. Underneath (4:06) You have all heard it so, make up your own opinions.
3. Straight Jacket (3:07) This is one of my favorite songs on the album, the sound is totally electronic, and I suppose this is one of those "dancey" songs, though with the material I don't know.. I don't think I am going to be hearing this over at Stereo or something but its great. It starts out:
"Something so benign for me, construed as cruelty
Such a difference between who I am and who you see
Conclusions you come to of me, routinely incorrect
I dont know who you're talking to with such fucking disrespect" (fucking disrespect is HEAVILY reinforced)
4. Versions of Violence (3:34) Again a very electro reinforced rock song, the beginning starts with a very low BOOMING Alanis voice, and goes into a very powerful sounding layered chorus. Surprising to me that in the album version the guitars during the chorus are more in the background, i thought from what we've heard they'd be harder and more up front but they are a bit more muted behind her voice. Some cool experimental sounds on this on as well.
5. Not As We (4:45) What we heard from House is exactly the song, just was part of it. Alanis, a piano, and good heartfelt lyrics. A definite Alanis classic type. Not much more to share on this.
6. In Praise of the Vulnerable Man (4:06) I feel like this is the sweeter chapter two of "A Man," its less about mans struggle but really exactly how the title explains, its praising the guy, telling him to "lead the rest of your cavalry home." She thanks him for letting her in, sweet and all, but this one is going to take many more listens for me to love. She does sing in a little different way than she's done before so it is sonically interesting to hear, even if I don't love the context.
7. Moratorium (5:35) This song literally even more than Citizen of the Planet is all over the place, and as everyone said was split up in the show. It is also a little faster than live. The song starts out very ambient, electric touch, there isnt much MUSIC behind Alanis singing at the beginning, then after the first verse it swings into a piano and strings transition, and starts to build up a bit into the next verse. There are many parts to this song, her voice sounds beautiful. I would consider the music a little more of an "epic" style especially going from very ambient to strong and powerful. (Though through work the word moritorium itself makes me cringe but I am trying to get by that)
8. Torch (4:47) This song isnt very distant from its live self as well. This is obviously about Ryan (unless she had one massively meaningful relationship with someone since that we didn't know about). The sound is much more classic Alanis, the one thing I love about this song is that her voice again is much more up front, and there's nothing but good that can come of that. Its a sad song, a little harder for me to relate to because she really lists a lot of specific things but still sad, just want to give her a hug.
9. Giggling Again For No Reason (3:47) This song is extremely electronic, honestly if I heard it at some random store, etc I almost wouldn't know it was Alanis. This is a very almost 80's style song, but I can barely make out a lot of the lyrics. Its really one of those "i let go and just had fun." I have never heard Alanis sound like this so its definitely an interesting listen.
10. Tapes (4:26) Back to the classic Alanis sound for the rest of the album. This song gets me, you can't start a song with "I am someone easy to leave, even easier to forget" and not just twist hearts. But again very similar to the live version so not really sure what else to say on it.
11. Incomplete (3:30) To me they really saved the best for last. I am really hoping this is a single. The first listen I had with this I was really not into it, and for the life of me now, I can't even figure out why. I remember describing the beginning of the song as "fairy tale folk" or something like that, it just sounds a little whimsical but what she says is amazing. The chorus is just so powerful and switches from acoustic to a mix of alanis rock and electro... it's a perfect marriage of alanis and guy, and I feel like they hit the jackpot on this one. The lyrics I copied again below.
Full Lyrics
One day ill find relief
I’ll be arriv-ed and ill be a friend to my friends who know how to be friends
One day ill be at peace
I’ll be enlightened and ill be married with children and maybe adopt
One day I will be healed
I will gather my wounds forge the end of tragic comedy
(Chorus)
I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete
One day, my mind will retreat, and ill know god and ill be constantly one with her night dusk and day
One day ill be secure, like the women I see on their 30th anniversaries
(Chorus)
I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete
Ever unfolding
Ever expanding
Ever adventurous and torturous
But never done
One day, I will speak freely
I’ll be less afraid
And measured outside of my poems and lyrics and art
One day I will be faith-filled
Ill be trusting and spacious authentic and grounded and whole
(Chorus)
I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete
