Jill Sobule 'Kissed A Girl' Long Before Katy Perry

Last year, when Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" stormed the charts and radio airwaves, people of a certain age wondered aloud, "Why would anybody want to cover a Jill Sobule song?" To which people of an entirely different (translation: much younger) responded, "Who is Jill Sobule?" The singer-songwriter — who also had a hit with a song called "I Kissed a Girl" in 1995 — talked to The Rumpus about how she felt about the song. "As a musician I have always refrained from criticizing another artist. I was, 'Well, good for her,'" she told the Web site. "It did bug me a little bit, however, when she said she came up with the idea for the title in a dream. In truth, she wrote it with a team of professional writers and was signed by the very same guy that signed me in 1995. I have not mentioned that in interviews as I don’t want to sound bitter or petty." She closed by saying, "If I really think about it, there were a few jealous and pissed off moments. So here goes, for the first time in an interview: F--- you, Katy Perry."
At least part of the interview was tongue-in-cheek, but even Sobule admits that some of her friends were angry that Perry had taken the title and turned it into "this kind of 'girls gone wild' thing." Indeed, Sobule's hit was a quirky exploration of sexuality. "I looked at you/ You had guilt in your eyes/ But it only lasted a little while/ And then I felt your hand above my knees," she sings coyly in the song. Interestingly, there's even a line that is mirrored by Perry's "cherry chapstick" line: "I kissed a girl/ Her lips were sweet/ She was just like kissing me."
Sobule continues to make albums. In fact, her most recent effort California Years got a little bit of buzz not only for being an excellent collection of SoCal tunes but also because it was entirely fan-funded. Sobule solicited donations for the production budget and rewarded fans with notes in the credits and a song that contained each of their names.

Jill Sobule Slams Katy Perry Over Borrowing Title “I Kissed a Girl”

It’s taken over a year, but alternative-era rocker Jill Sobule has finally admitted she’s angry about Katy Perry’s use of the song title “I Kissed A Girl.” You’d think that the past 12 months would have tempered some of Sobule’s anger toward Perry, but judging by Sobule’s comments to The Rumpus (via The Daily Swarm), her bottled displeasure has been finally unleashed, with Sobule going as far as calling Perry a “fucking little slut.” Last summer, Sobule told EW she didn’t “feel precious about the title … although I will admit that I do smile when a critique mentions my version in a more favorable light. Is that wrong?”
In her new interview, Sobule reiterates she was cool with the song at first. Although Katy Perry is trying to stop designer Katie Perry from using of her name, Sobule says you can’t copyright a song title so she had no legal argument against Perry’s song. “As a musician I have always refrained from criticizing another artist. I was, ‘well, good for her.’ It did bug me a little bit, however, when she said she came up with the idea for the title in a dream,” Sobule tells the Rumpus. “In truth, she wrote it with a team of professional writers and was signed by the very same guy that signed me in 1995. I have not mentioned that in interviews as I don’t want to sound bitter or petty… ’cause, that’s not me.”
However, in the very next sentence, Sobule finally lets loose 18 months of frustration and jealousy, saying for the first time, “Fuck you Katy Perry, you fucking stupid, maybe ‘not good for the gays,’ title thieving, haven’t heard much else, so not quite sure if you’re talented, fucking little slut.” To Perry’s credit, she was only 11 when Sobule’s “I Kissed a Girl” was released in 1995. Shockingly, Perry has yet to respond via Twitter to Sobule’s remarks, but we anticipate a 140-character rebuttal in the near future.

I remember the day I received a promotional e-mail to watch the new “I Kissed a Girl” video by an artist I’d never heard of, Katy Perry. I watched the whole video hoping to see a hot girl-on-girl kiss and there was no action whatsoever. I thought the song was too hard and the video was too much of a tease and never imagined that it would be a hit. In my mind, it didn’t compare to the cute “I Kissed a Girl” song I knew from 1995. The 1995 song is a sweet kind of sentimental tribute to experimental lesbianism while Perry’s version treats a same sex kiss as just another experience to brag about.
Perry managed to catapult that song to the top of the charts, though, and has had other hit singles, like “Hot ‘N Cold.” She’s a hard worker and a tireless self promoter and has won many fans with her wacky, friendly image. There’s at least one person who would rather not be a witness to Katy Perry’s massive fame. Singer Jill Sobule really resents the fact that Perry’s hit single has the same name as her 1995 song, particularly because Perry claimed that she came up with the title but just happened to be working with the same producers that helped make Sobule’s song a hit:

That was really harsh and there’s no need to call names. Sobule should be blaming the people she worked with, not Perry. It’s not like there are any similarities to the songs other than the title and general concept. Sobule never really had a hit beyond that “I Kissed a Girl” song and another single at the time, “Supermodel,” and you can tell she resents it. According to

, her last album was financed with fan donations made through her website. It must be really rough to be a musician and the odds of reaching sustained success are like hitting the lottery. Speaking about watching Katy's I Kissed A Girl top charts around the world, she told TheRumpus: "When her version came out I started getting tons of inquiries about what I thought.
"Some folks were angry and wondered why she took my title and made it into this kind of 'girls gone wild' thing.
"Others, including my mother, were excited because they thought I would somehow make some money out of it.
"Unfortunately you can't copyright a title... bummer."

Katy Perry Pisses Off Someone Else

Someone else has come out against Katy Perry and her song I Kissed A Girl. Maybe she should have called it I Pissed Off A lot Of Girls.
The newest angry bitch to make her voice heard is Jill Sobule, a singer/songwriter we've never heard of nor do we really care who she is. She wrote a song with the same title, I Kissed A Girl, back in 1995, but with different music and lyrics.
However, regardless of the major differences, Jill is still super pissed at Katy for being a "thieving slut!"
Whoa! Bitter much? Actually, bitter A LOT! When asked about the song, Jill had this to say:

That was the worst insult we've ever read! She needs some help coming up with these insults. This bitch should call Beth Ditto so they can vent on each other about Katy.

2009 MTV Video Music Awards Nominees Complete List (Video)

MTV just announced the nominees for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and the ladies will clearly dominate this year’s award show. Beyonce and Lady Gaga earn nine nominations each for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)”, “Poker Face” and “Paparazzi” respectively. Britney Spears follows with an impressive seven combined nominations for “Womanizer” and “Circus.”

Katy Perry What?

This is a follow up to a recent post on OMG, Idol, and Paula Abdul leaving over some conflict perhaps about, go figure, $$. The remaining question in that meaningless saga was who cares? Even in the pic above it appears Perry is gesturing a ‘heart’ with her hands but both her hands and arms could be gesturing ‘ZERO’. Draw you own conclusion.
Now the report is Katy Perry is the replacement. How’s that for cloning? Same gender, similar hair color and a marginal talent. But at least one video is entertaining as well as a parody video also presented here.

For obvious reasons the content of the video may at least be entertaining to some degree. Perry’s vocals, if this isn’t a Milli Vanilli thing, are decent. Adequate range demonstrated with an effective use of falsetto. So now, on to the parody with similar qualities.

The parody vid was reviewed in an effort to insure the absence of tasteless content. American Idol should have chosen the Venetian Princess for Abdul’s replacement. Besides, Abdul may translate into English as ‘the slave’. So how does Paula the Slave justify accepting any $$ for her role on Idol?

Katy Perry To Appear As Guest Judge On 'American Idol'

Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham will also make a one-time appearance in Paula Abdul's absence.

Just as it was confirmed that Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham would be a guest judge on an episode of "American Idol" comes news that Katy Perry will also be stopping by the judges' table.
The ladies join the show just as Paula Abdul announced earlier this week she would be leaving after eight seasons. Reuters reports that Perry, as well as Beckham, would be a part of the show during the audition rounds but added that neither pop star would take on the judge role permanently.
The next round of auditions for the show begins Sunday, and it seems the show's intention, for now, is to get female pop stars and performers to help fill Abdul's void for the time being.
Peter Rice, chairman of entertainment at Fox, told Reuters that "between now and January [when the show airs], we will come up with a permanent solution on what we will do. ... Obviously, there is going to be a different dynamic, [and] there is something exciting about that."
Rice went on to say that while they will have guest judges until the spot is filled permanently, the real trick is finding someone who will fit in with Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.
"What we need to find is someone who has great chemistry," he said. "It really is a casting job. Our job in the next four or five months is to consider what makes this the most fun, the most entertaining show."

Katy Perry gets turned off by men with bad breath. The "Hot N Cold" singer - who is in an on-off relationship with Gym Class Heroes rapper Travis McCoy - would never date a guy who doesn't keep his mouth clean.
She wrote on her Twitter page: "I mean, ladies, how many times did u think that guy was hot but just couldn't deal w/ his breathe? Sense of smell is most important! Agree?"
"Some1 next to me has a bad case of halitosis and won't stop talking. I can't breathe. Don't know him but wonder if anyone's eva told him?"
"R u the type of friend that wouldn't tell ur friend if they had something stuck in their teeth? What bout bad breath? Wouldn't u wanna know?"
Meanwhile, Katy has revealed she wants to be as big a star as Gwen Stefani.
The 24-year-old brunette has nothing but admiration for Gwen, 39, because she has had so many years of success in the music business, firstly with her recently reformed band No Doubt.
In a posting on Twitter, she wrote: "When I grow up I want to be just like Gwen Stefani. It's not a race it's a marathon. I keep telling myself this. Think of the big picture. Well the music industry doesn't let u grow anymore. Everything has 2B now, so immediate. Like Gwen - that is 15 years in the making. I can't wait to make magic like that in 15 yrs, I just don't know if people will wait for people to grow like they used too."
"Music is not fast food. It should change and grow and not be such competition of who's on top or not. We all want our musicians to b of Beyonce/Madonna level from the get go when we forget those amazing girls have been doing it for 15-25 years."

Katy Perry guest judge on ’American Idol'

Because Paula Abdul said she will not come back for the ninth season of ’American Idol’ and Victoria Beckham is still undecided, the show’s producers thought it would be better to have a few guests judges in the seven weeks of taped audition rounds. In the meanwhile they will decide if somebody will permanently take Paula Abdul’s place or not. Or, if eventually Abdul will let her pride a way and take back her role in the show.

After all, the producers still hope for Abdul, who asked for $ 20 million, but would agree even for $ 10 million, to come back. "We love Paula. She's been a really wonderful part of the show for eight years", Fox chairman Peter Rice told the FOX Television Critics Association on Thursday.

But if she doesn’t come back, the producers have to be prepared. "There is going to be a change and that change we have to look at that as being a positive change. It wasn't a decision we made, but we have to look at it in a positive way", Rice added.

So, beside Victoria Beckham they thought about another guest judge: Katy Perry! She will most probably join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the auditions which begin Friday in Denver.

"We'll have these guest judges do one week each during the audition [period]... there is no thought right now that any of these judges will be long term judge for us. All of the people we are talking to have successful careers. I don't even think they'd be available to judge full-time. We have now until January to introduce a new energy to the panel", Rice also said.
